PORTLAND — Port Angeles’ two standouts this summer, outfielder Jeremy Giesegh and second baseman Roberto Nunez, were named to the 2024 All-West Coast League teams unveiled Wednesday by West Coast League Commissioner Rob Neyer.
“I’ve now served as commissioner for six WCL seasons,” said Neyer, “and it’s pretty clear that we’re just getting more talented every summer. We saw that in the most recent MLB draft, and we saw it during our tremendous All-Star Game on MLB Network the same week.”
Nunez was the lone repeat All-WCL selection this summer after making the second team in 2023 for Port Angeles. Nunez is entering his senior season at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott, Ariz., campus.
Garcia posted a .299 batting average this summer in 53 games with a team-high five home runs and 34 RBIs with 14 doubles and one triple.
Giesegh was Port Angeles’ WCL All-Star Game representative in July after leading the league in batting average for the vast majority of the summer.
He ended up hitting .348, good for fifth overall in the WCL, with three home runs and 30 RBIs in 53 games. Giesegh also showed off some wheels on the basepaths, collecting seven doubles and four triples and swiping 12 bases.
He will be a junior at Cal-State San Bernadino this year.
The WCL’s Most Valuable Player and Pitcher of the Year Awards also were announced, with Ridgefield Raptors outfielder Hunter Katschke (Utah Tech) named WCL MVP and Portland Pickles ace Freddy Rodriguez (University of Hawaii) earning Pitcher of the Year honors.
Katschke hit .367 with a WCL-high nine home runs and was third in RBI with 43.
Rodriguez went 6-0 with a league-high 54 strikeouts and a 1.02 ERA in 44 innings and was 1-0 in the postseason for the WCL-champion Portland Pickles.
