LEFTIES: Port Angeles gets off to good start but falls to Portland 9-2

PORTLAND — The Port Angeles Lefties got off to a good start with a two-run top of the first inning against Portland, but the Pickles responded with two runs in the first and five more in the second en route to a 9-2 win Tuesday night.

Lefties starting pitcher Corey Sanchez gave up eight runs in two innings, but only three of them were earned. He allowed two home runs in the second inning, one solo shot by Leo Mosby and the other a three-run bomb by Ryan Guardino after an error allowed the inning to continue.

Ryan Wike and Brock Wrolstad pitched well in relief, combining for six innings, five hits, one run, three walks and seven strikeouts.

But the Lefties couldn’t manage any more runs for the rest of the game.

At the plate, Coleman Schmidt was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Javy Espinoza and Carson Crawford hit doubles, while Player of the Week Nick Oakley had a single. Bryce Matthews had an RBI single in the first inning.

The Lefties played at Portland Wednesday night after press deadline. They play again at the Pickles at 7:05 p.m. tonight.
