PORT ANGELES — Despite an eighth-inning comeback by the Port Angeles Lefties, the Bend Elks had the last laugh Friday night at Civic Field. Marco Young plated two runs with a double into the right-field corner and the Elks escaped with a 4–2, 10-inning victory in the series opener.

The Lefties had won their previous three games, the series finale in Walla Walla and a home doubleheader sweep on Wednesday in a rain-abbreviated series with the Yakima Valley Pippins.

Thursday’s contest with Yakima Valley was rained out.

In Friday’s contest, starting pitcher Dwayne Angebrant turned in an exceptional outing on the mound for Port Angeles, allowing just one run on four hits in six innings. However, he left the contest with the Lefties trailing 1-0.

The deficit had reached 2-0 in the eighth inning when Port Angeles’ Charlie Nasuti led off with a bloop double to right field. After two outs, Damiano Palmegiani reached on a throwing error that scored Nasruti. C.J. Schauwecker then came in cold off the bench and hit a pinch-hit single to send Palmegiani home and tie the game at 2-all.

After a walk to Baxter Halligan, pinch-runner Nick Berry was picked off second base to end the rally.

Port Angeles went in order in the ninth inning to set up Young’s heroics in extras. The Lefties (11-13, 9-12 WCL) have lost both of their extra-innings contests in 2019.
