LEFTIES: Port Angeles falls in extra innings against defending champs

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Port Angeles plated runs in the first three innings against defending West Coast League champion Corvallis but couldn’t hold on and hold back the Knights in a 4-3 loss in 11 innings.

Wednesday’s game at Oregon State University’s Goss Stadium was the Lefties’ first extra-innings contest in team history.

Port Angeles allowed Corvallis to score four unearned runs on three errors, including the walkoff winner in the bottom half of the 11th inning.

Knights shortstop Matt Kelly led off the 11th with a single and was sacrificed to second. Kevin Watson walked, and Kelly scored when Lefties catcher Benny Kaleiwahea threw the ball into center field on a double steal when Port Angeles failed to cover second base.

The Lefties scored a run in each of the first three innings.

Taylor Adams doubled in the first inning and scored on a Sean Roby sacrifice fly to right field.

Joey Galeno was hit by a Corvallis pitch to open the second inning. Michael Ciancio singled and after an out, Mitchell Hagan singled to load the bases.

After a fly-ball second out, Tengan then singled to right to score Galeno, but Ciancio was thrown out trying to score to end the inning.

Roby homered in the third, but the Lefties’ bats were nearly silent for the rest of the game.

Knights relievers Trevor Wells (three innings pitched), Tanner Howell (two) and Chase Kaplan (one) combined to shut down Port Angeles over the final six innings. They allowed just two hits and Kaplan got the win after throwing a scoreless 11th inning.

The Lefties (5-8) played Corvallis after press deadline Thursday and will face the Knights in the final game of their three-game series Friday at 6:40 p.m.
