PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles stranded nine base runners in a 9-0 shutout loss to the Redmond Dudes in the opener of a three-game nonleague series Friday night at Civic Field.
Redmond starter Joe Schwab worked deep into the contest, scattering four hits and three walks over 7.1 innings, striking out five.
In this era of pitcher specialization and lower pitch counts, the Puget Sound freshman threw 136 pitches in the contest, 87 for strikes.
“He didn’t have overpowering stuff but he threw fastballs for strikes and he placed breaking balls when he had to and made our hitters look foolish,” Lefties pitcher Joe Sinclair said of Schwab. “He threw 130-plus pitches, competed hard and you have to give him credit.”

Offensively, Port Angeles was inoffensive.
“The energy wasn’t there, we didn’t hit the ball like we normally do or get timely hits, we didn’t get anything in motion on the bases,” Lefties pitcher Justin Miller said.
“And on the pitching side of it we didn’t throw a lot of strikes or get their leadoff hitters out.”
Port Angeles native Ethan Flodstrom made his summer debut for the Lefties after recovering from a broken foot suffered during his freshman season at Tacoma Community College.
Flodstrom walked in his lone plate appearance.
The Lefties are back at it for a 1:35 p.m. matinee contest today against Redmond.

Thursday’s game Apple Sox 6, Lefties 2
PORT ANGELES — Shortstop Nick Oakley hit his first home run of the summer, but the Apple Sox earned the series win on the strength of starting pitcher Hunter Salinas.
Salinas allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks in six innings on the mound, striking out eight Lefties.
Port Angeles had a good chance to score multiple runs in the second, but came away with just one on the scoreboard.
Trevor Tishenkel reached base via a fielder’s choice in the bottom and advanced to third base on a Jack Holman single and an error by the Wenatchee left fielder. Tishenkel then came home on a balk by Salinas, but the Lefties’ swung themselves out of the inning.
Wenatchee pushed five runs across in the fifth, one on a hit batter, another via walk and highlighted by an RBI double by AJ Guerrero of the University of Washington.
Oakley’s solo home run in the bottom half of the inning was all the offense Port Angeles (7-14) could muster.
Wenatchee’s Jackson Van De Brake singled, walked and scored twice. He is the younger brother of 2018 Lefties player and Washington State senior Justin Van De Brake.
