WENATCHEE — Port Angeles pitchers allowed 12 runs on 18 hits in a 12-3 loss to the Wenatchee AppleSox on Wednesday at Paul Thomas Field.
It was rough from the beginning for Lefties’ starter Alex Jemal (1-1). Jemal opened with a leadoff walk and eventually allowed two runs on three hits in the opening frame followed by four runs on three hits and an error in the second as Wenatchee opened up a 6-0 lead.
One of those second inning hits was a two-run home run by AppleSox first baseman/pitcher Connor McCord.
McCord finished a double short of the cycle on the game and also pitched the final three innings, striking out four, to pick up the save for Tyler Chipman (1-0) who tossed six strong innings.
Trey Morgan was one of the lone bright spots for Port Angeles (8-15, 20-30).
Morgan slugged a solo home run in the fourth inning and finished the game 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.
The home run was the 56th for the Lefties in 50 games this summer. They have four more contests to add to their new West Coast League record total.
Port Angeles shattered the previous West Coast League record for most home runs by a team in a single season (49 in 54 games by Bellingham in 2017) last month.
The Lefties return to Port Angeles today for the final West Coast League series of the season, a three-game set against the red-hot Portland Pickles (16-6, 33-15), winners of their last six games.
Game times are 6:35 p.m. today and Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
Portland already has wrapped up the first-half South Division championship and a playoff berth and is tied with Corvallis for the second-half championship.
Port Angeles’ Brady Shimko, a 2018 Port Angeles graduate and Wilder Baseball player will get the start on the mound in the the Lefties’ last contest of the season, an exhibition against the Highline Bears at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.
