PORT ANGELES — Brock Mayer came through with the eventual game-winning two-run bloop single to center in the sixth inning as Port Angeles knocked off Kamloops 4-1 Wednesday at Civic Field.
Earlier in the same frame Isaiah Walz’ notched his first home run with the Lefties, a high fly inside the left-field foul pole to knot the game at 1-all.
Port Angeles added an insurance run in the seventh on a Walz RBI single.
Kamloops’ lone run came on a Robin Villeneuve solo shot in the top of the sixth.
That was the lone blemish on a sterling pitching performance from Port Angeles starter Kassin Matson.
Matson earned his first West Coast League win in his first start, and the Edmonds Community College product went seven innings, giving up just two hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Matson never allowed the leadoff man to reach base and he only allowed three men to reach second base all night.
NorthPaws (9-29) starter Maclain Roberts was saddled with a tough loss going six plus innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, five walks, with three strikeouts.
Port Angeles grad Kole Acker earned his first save of the summer while picking up a couple strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.
Howard University’s Julio Vasquez totaled two hits, a stolen base and scored a run for the Lefties and Chase Taylor and Kyle Becker tallied doubles.
Umpire hit, is OK
Home plate umpire Chris Castro was involved in a scary moment during the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the count 0-1 to Port Angeles’ Ethan Young, Noah Loew threw a high fastball in the high 80-mile per hour range that connected square in Castro’s chest protector on a pitch that likely crossed up catcher, Bennett Freiter.
Castro fell to the groun and remained down for a couple of minutes before composing himself and finishing out the contest behind the plate.
Port Angeles (11-27) visits Kelowna (21-17) for a three-game series tonight through Sunday.
