LEFTIES: Lefties split two; Nowak grand slam propels them to win

PORT ANGELES — The Lefties got some good pitching, especially from their bullpen, but managed just five hits in a loss to West Coast League North Division leader Bellingham 5-2 in the Bells’ first visit to Civic Field.

The Bells’ Tyler Radcliffe pitched six innings and gave up just two hits and one earned run to pick up the win Friday night. For the Lefties, Aki Buckson (Bellevue College) and Ty Gartner (Olympic College) made their first appearances for the team and pitched outstanding. Buckson went two innings in relief, gave up one hit and struck out three. Gartner went two innings, gave up no hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Benny Kaleiwahea and Alex Tengan each had a hit and an RBI. Michael Ciancio scored a run, while Taylor Adams had a hit and a run scored.

In Thursday night’s game against Gresham, the Lefties got six runs in the first inning, thanks in large part to Ian Nowak’s grand slam home run and cruised the rest of the way for a 6-3 win.

Nowak’s home run was his fourth of the year.

Ciancio also had a two-run single with the bases loaded in that first inning.

Cam Walker got his first win of the year for the Lefties, going 6 strong innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out four. The bullpen was again outstanding with Grant Fisher and Jake Suddreth giving up zero hits and zero runs in two combined innings of relief. Suddreth went the ninth inning to pick up the save, his third of the year.

Fisher, Aaron Charles and Suddreth combined for six strikeouts in the final three innings.

All four Lefties pitchers didn’t gave up a single extra-base hit as all of Gresham’s nine hits were singles.

Jake Portaro and Adams each had two hits in the game, with Adams adding a walk and a run scored.

The Lefties played Saturday after press deadline, then finish with the Bells at 5:05 p.m. today. They have Monday off, then will play a nonleague game against the Thurston County Senators from the Puget Sound Collegiate League at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.

Notes

In the Bells’ game Friday, Sequim’s Evan Hurn, playing first base for the Bells, went 0 for 3 with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Lefties’ bullpen in their past two games have gone 10 innings with 16 strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs.
