LEFTIES: Lefties roar back to win — twice

PORT ANGELES — The Lefties ended one streak and have started a new streak — two games in a row coming from way down to win.

Port Angeles rode a couple of big innings Saturday and Sunday to win come from behind twice against the Victoria HarbourCats.

Down 5-0 on Sunday, the Lefties scored six runs in the seventh inning to go on to win 8-6. This came after a similar performance Saturday night, as the Lefties rode a five-run sixth inning to come from behind to beat the HarbourCats 9-6, snapping a seven-game losing streak,

The big blows in that seventh inning were a pair of two-run home runs by Brady Heid and Matthew Christian.

Alex Jemal pitched a great game in relief for the Lefties, going four innings and giving up no earned runs as Port Angeles clawed back.

Christian finished the game 2 for 4 with his home run, a run scored and three RBIs. Heid was 2 for 3 with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Austin Earl had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

In Saturday’s big sixth inning, the big blows were a two-run single by Jason Dicochea and a two-run home run by Earl.

The HarbourCats got to starter Baxter Halligan right away, scoring four runs to go up 4-0 after 1½ innings. After the second inning, Halligan settled down, giving up just one more run in the fifth as the Lefties clawed back to make it 5-3.

Tyler Tan took over in the sixth and shut down the HarbourCats the rest of the way, giving up just one unearned run over the last four innings.

Tan allowed two hits and three walks and struck out five to pick up the victory.

The Lefties’ huge sixth inning all happened after two outs. It began with a Trevor Rosenberg single, followed by a Matthew Christian single. Ron Brown then loaded the bases with a walk. A balk allowed Rosenberg to score to make it 5-4, while Brown and Christian moved up to second and third.

Dicochea followed with his two-run single to give the Lefties a 6-5 lead. Earl belted his home run next to clear the bases, making it 8-5. Rosenberg tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double, driving home Justin VanDebrake, who had reached on a single.

Christian ended the game 3 for 5 with a double, a run and an RBI. Rosenberg was 3 for 5 with a run and two RBIs, and Dicochea was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Earl was 2 for 5 with a home run, a run and two RBIs.

Halligan and Tan combined to strike out 10 batters total while walking four.

The Lefties complete their series with Victoria at 3:05 p.m. today.
