LEFTIES: Lefties hit two more HRs but AppleSox come back to win

PORT ANGELES — The Lefties got home runs from Dalton Harum and Austin Earl and four hits from Justin VanDebrake, but it wasn’t enough to fend off a comeback from the Wenatchee AppleSox in an 8-7 loss at Civic Field on Sunday.

The AppleSox, aided by a home run from Mason Marenco, scored two runs in the eighth inning to pull out the win. Marenco also had two doubles, while Jordan Rathbone also hit a home run for Wenatchee.

Earl hit his fourth home run of the year and his second of the weekend for the Lefties and drove in three runs.

As usual this season, the Lefties showed a ton of power, with 12 hits, five of them doubles. Ronnie Rust went 2 for 4 with two doubles, Trey Morgan hit a double and Jason Dicochea and VanDebrake hit doubles. Kyle Schimpf went 2 for 5.

Baxter Halligan gave up the two runs in the eighth and took the loss. Tyler Tan started the game, going six innings and giving up five earned runs.

The Lefties were up 7-2 at one point, but four runs by the AppleSox in the sixth and two more in the eighth proved to be the difference.

With the loss, the Lefties are 10-11 on the season in a three-way tie for third place in the West Coast League’s North Division.

Evan Pace was 3 for 3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while Matt Christian, Marcus Lydon, Harum and Dicochea all hit doubles. Lydon drove in two runs. Trevor Rosenberg and Dicochea each had two hits.

The Lefties blew the game open with a six-run fourth inning to build up a 9-2 lead. The AppleSox cut it to 9-7, but the Lefties pulled away with a one-run fifth and three-run sixth.

On the mound, Garrett Westberg started the game and picked up the win, going six innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs, while walking three and striking out six. Triston Busse went 2 1/3 innings, giving up an earned run, while walking three and striking out three.

The Lefties are also leading the WCL in runs scored with 127, an average of 6 runs a game.

The Lefties get today off, then they go on a road trip to Kelowna, B.C. and Cowlitz (Longview) beginning with a game Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. in Kelowna.
