LEFTIES: Lefties claw back to beat Knights

PORT ANGELES — The Lefties got down 6-4 early, but clawed back over the last three innings to eke out a hard-fought win over the Corvallis Knights 7-6.

The Lefties scored one run each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings Sunday to come from behind to beat the Knights. Grant Fisher pitched two outstanding innings in the eighth and ninth, giving up no hits and just a lone walk to earn the win. He also struck out two batters.

In fact, a quartet of Lefties pitchers held the Knights to four hits the whole game while striking out 14. Jacob Battaglia started and went 3 2/3 innings, giving up just a lone hit and striking out four while giving up one earned run. Trayson Kubo went 2 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit and one earned run while walking two and striking out five.

It was the Lefties’ last game of the year against the Knights, who at 26-13, are the best team in the West Coast League. The Lefties went 2-4 against the Knights, with one of those losses in extra innings and another game in Corvallis a close two-run loss.

The Lefties won without a big inning. They scored in every inning from the fifth through the ninth, with two runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth through ninth innings.

Seth Freed hit a two-run home run in the game in the fifth inning and ended the game with three RBIs. Kevin Kendall had two doubles and scored a run, while Sean Roby and Michael Ciancio each had two hits.

The Lefties (15-25 overall, 5-8 in the second half) have tonight off as today is the WCL All-Star Game in Yakima. Lefties Nick Bonniksen and Brody Kato are on the North squad, while Lefty Ian Nowak participated in Monday’s WCL home run derby. The Lefties return to play against the Cowlitz Black Bears at Civic Field at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.
