LEFTIES: Cowlitz a thorn in Port Angeles’ side

Peninsula Daily News

LONGVIEW — The Cowlitz Black Bears don’t have a very good record compared with the rest of the West Coast League, but they sure have the Lefties’ number so far this season.

Cowlitz blanked the Lefties 8-0 Friday night behind a combined five-hitter from Zach Heaton and Marty Maves. The Black Bears are 4-0 against the Lefties this season but just 5-13 against the rest of the West Coast League.

Kyle Schimpf hit a double for the Lefties, while Drew Minter, Trey Morgan, Jason Dicochea and Cameron Allie all had singles.

That was all the offense the Lefties could manage against Heaton and Maves, who didn’t give up a single walk as they allowed just five baserunners the entire game. Heaton started and went seven shutout innings to pick up the win. The Lefties’ Rhyse Frey took the loss, giving up all eight runs.

One bright spot for the Lefties was pitcher Matt Dunaway, who went 2 1/3 innings, giving up no hits, no walks and no runs.

Blake Burton did much of the offensive damage for the Black Bears, hitting two doubles and driving in five runs. Former Leftie Dutton Elske had a hit and two RBIs for Cowlitz.

It was the fourth-straight loss for the Lefties on their road trip to Kelowna and Longview.

Port Angeles (10-15) and Cowlitz (9-13) played Saturday after press deadline. They will play again at 7:05 p.m. today. The Lefties return home to Civic Field to face Kelowna at 6:35 p.m. Monday.

KELOWNA, B.C. — The Lefties couldn’t avoid the series sweep by the Falcons on Thursday.

Kelowna was boosted once again by Trent Tinglestad. Tinglestad hit a three-run home run to give Kelowna a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning and drove in four RBIs on the night.

Tinglestad also homered and drove in four RBIs for the Falcons in Wednesday’s win over Port Angeles.

Drew Minter hit a two-run home run for the Lefties in the first inning, driving in Trevor Rosenberg who previously singled.

Rykker Tom added an RBI triple for Port Angeles.

Rosenberg led Port Angeles at the plate with a 3 for 5 night with a run and two RBIs, including a two-out single in the top of the ninth, but pinch hitter Marcus Lydon struck out swinging to end the game.
