LONGVIEW — The Port Angeles Lefties got a home run for the second straight game from Coleman Schmidt, but were not able to keep up with Cowlitz Black Bears’ bats in a 13-4 road loss Friday night.
The Lefties won Thursday night 3-2 over the Portland Pickles behind Schmidt’s three-run home run and some outstanding pitching.
In Friday’s game, Schmidt belted a two-run home run in the opening frame to give the Lefties a 2-0 lead. Port Angeles scored another two runs in the second when Nathan Chong got on base with a double and Bryce Matthews hit a single. Nick Oakley drove both of them in with a single.
However that was the end of the Lefties’ scoring. The Black Bears scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to pull away.
Luke Jewett took the loss. He went 3â…” innings and gave up five earned runs and six hits. He walked none and struck out three. A quartet of relievers gave up another six earned runs.
Jack Holman was 2-for-4 and Matthews finished 2-for-3.
Thursday’s win
In Thursday’s game in Portland, the Lefties found themselves locked in a pitchers’ duel until the fifth inning. The teams entered the fifth in a 0-0 tie with Lefties’ starter Riley Aggson matching the Pickles’ Eric Hill.
Schmidt blew the game open with a home run, driving in Luke Saunders and Javy Espinoza, who had both reached on base on singles.
The Pickles rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Aggson was able to get a fly ball out with two runners on base to keep the Lefties in front.
From that point on, four Lefties relievers went the final four innings, keeping the Pickles off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. Justin Sinclair, Ryan Wike, Zach Ediger and Zach Thomas combined to allow no hits, two walks and struck out five. Thomas went 2â…“ innings to pick up the well-earned save. Aggson got his first win for the Lefties.
Schmidt ended up going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs. Espinoza was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Lefties played at Cowlitz on Saturday evening after press deadline. They play at 1 p.m. Sunday, then travel to Wenatchee on Tuesday to play the AppleSox in a three-game series. This is the Lefties’ final road trip of the year.
