RIDGEFIELD — The Lefties were unable to serve as wedding crashers Wednesday night, falling to the Ridgefield Raptors 9-2 after witnessing the on-field nuptials of Raptors’ pitcher Eli Shubert and Erin Thum.
The pre-game ceremony was officiated by Josh Worden, the Ridgefield play-by-play announcer, who is also an ordained minister, according to The Columbian.
“In his remarks during the ceremony, Worden pointed out that Shubert had not allowed a home run in either his 18.1 innings with Lewis-Clark State or the 18.1 innings of work with the Raptors,” Columbian assistant sports editor Tim Martinez wrote.
“So don’t start now,” Worden said.
And what did Port Angeles’ Nick Oakley do with Shubert on the mound in the eighth inning? He ended Shubert’s homer-less streak by homering to right-center field off the newly married hurler.
The blast scored Port Angeles’ own Ethan Flodstrom, who went 2 for 3 on the night.
Shubert did pitch a clean ninth inning to pick up a three-inning save in relief of Raptors’ starter Brock Gillis.
Gillis was dealing in his six innings on the mound, allowing just two hits and striking out 10.
Ridgefield put three runs across in the third to end Lefties’ starter Riley Aggson’s night and went after his relief, Oregon State freshman Jonah Giblin to the tune of six earned runs in 2.1 innings.
Port Angeles (7-16) could only manage Oakley’s homer, the lone spoiler to Shubert’s big day.
The Lefties return to Civic Field tonight for the opening game of the second half against the Walla Walla Sweets at 6:35 p.m.
