JOYCE DAZE: Big Kahuna dominates the slug races

JOYCE — Big Kahuna, sponsored by Northwest Board Room, outpaced the field of 12 slugs to take both the first and second heats at the Extreme Slug Racing on Saturday at Joyce Daze.

The annual event raised more than $900 for the Joyce Fire Department.

Other sponsored slugs included Bedford Soda’s “Pop”, Family Kitchen’s “Turbo”, Fogtown Coffee’s “Slugguccino”, Wilder’s “Jetta” and Vivian’s “Elvis.”

Walk-up entries included Sluggy, Gary’s Fury, Salt Creek Sprinter and Fred.

Hot weather made the track slower this year, with disappointing showings by all other than Big Kahuna.

Officials called a halt to Race No. 3 after an hour and fifteen minute wait for the first slug to make a move.

However, race-goers did not let sluggish slugs curb their enthusiasm, with donations easily passing last year’s amount.

The event is held each year at the Family Kitchen in Joyce to benefit Clallam County Fire District No. 4.

No slugs were harmed during the races, and all were released back to their natural habitat after the races.
