GYMNASTICS: Port Angeles wins subregional championship, will compete as a team at district championship

DES MOINES — The Port Angeles gymnastics team earned a Class 2A/3A subregional championship victory, led by second and third-place all-around finishes by Maya Wharton and Cassandra Middlestead.

The Roughriders scored a team total of 152.55 points, 21 points better than second-place North Kitsap in Thursday’s meet.

Port Angeles will compete as a team at the West Central District Championships at Mount Rainier High School on Saturday.

“The depth of the team this year has resulted in great success,” coach Megan Monds said.

“The difference between the top performers and lower performers on the team is minimal and contributes to our ability to do well, even against 4A teams.”

The team is ready to face the district meet next Saturday at Mount Rainier High School with the goal of advancing to the state meet as a team.

Wharton won the floor exercise with a score of 9.4, was third on the balance beam and in the vault and fourth on the uneven bars.

“Maya Wharton gave her best performance of the year on floor, and the team managed to walk away from the beam event with only one fall,” Monds said.

Wharton’s all-around score was 32.15, behind overall champion Mikka Yamane of Kingston (33.625).

Middlestead was first on the uneven bars after scoring a 7.9. She was second on the balance beam, fifth in the floor exercise and 12th in the vault for an all-around total of 31.825.

Sydney Miner placed fifth in the all-around for the Riders, her highest score, an 8.75 came in the floor exercise in which she finished fourth.

Miner also was fourth on the balance beam.

Nikki Price finished sixth in the all-around for Port Angeles after recording an all-around score of 29.675. Price placed fifth on the vault (7.75) and fifth on the uneven bars (6.45).

Sequim gymnasts Elizabeth Sweet and Ennisa Albin also advanced to the district meet.
