GYMNASTICS: Klahhane gymnasts bring back medals from regionals

SALEM, Ore. — Five athletes from Klahhane Gymnastics competed last week at the USA Gymnastics Region 2 Xcel Regional Championship in Salem, Ore., hosted by The Athletic Edge, bringing back a trove of medals.

The team included three Xcel Gold-level gymnasts — Abigail Odland, Raynee Ciarlo and Lorelei Sanders—and two Xcel Platinum-level gymnasts — Carly Mae Riggs and Elyse Brown. Coaches Cassidy Tamburro and Tonya Glampe accompanied the athletes.

USA Gymnastics Region 2 includes athletes from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. To qualify for regionals, gymnasts must meet specific criteria based on their Xcel level and performance at the state meet. For Xcel Gold athletes, qualification is determined using a percentage-of-a-percentage system, with a set number of athletes advancing from each state. This year, the top 380 Gold gymnasts earned spots at regionals. For Xcel Platinum athletes, qualification requires either a 35.0 all-around score or an individual event score of 8.5 or higher to compete as an event specialist.

The five Klahhane gymnasts brought home a total of eight medals, representing Washington and the Olympic Peninsula with stellar performances and high scores.

Xcel Platinum

• Elyse Brown (Junior B age group): Third on vault 9.05, 12th on bars 9.1, 12th on beam 9.325, 14th all-around, 35.725.

• Carly Mae Riggs (Child A age group): Sixth on vault 9.0, seventh on floor 9.375, 14th all-around, 36.125.

Xcel Gold

• Abigail Odland (Junior B age group): Sixth on bars 9.375, eighth on beam 9.35, 15th all-around, 36.125.

• Lorelei Sanders (Junior D age group): 19th on bars 9.05, fourth on floor 9.575, 18th all-around, 35.675.

• Raynee Ciarlo (Senior A age group): Sixth on vault 8.8, ninth on beam 9.075, 13th all-around, 9.125.

Klahhane Gymnastics will host pre-team and team tryouts on May 17, with the exact time to be announced. Details will be shared on the gym’s website and Facebook page, where information about upcoming summer recreational classes will also be posted.
