GOLF: Wilder Baseball benefit tourney on tap

THE THIRD EDITION of Wilder Baseball Club’s Sweet Swing Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 12 features a venue change as the tournament moves to Port Angeles’ Peninsula Golf Club after two years at Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim.

Peninsula Golf Club head pro Chad Wagner is a former Wilder player and manager of the team, so hosting the benefit for the boys of summer is a natural fit.

Registration for the four-person team best ball scramble event will begin at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun start planned for noon.

The top two scoring teams will win awards. Closest to the pin and long and straight drive contests also will be held during play.

A boxed lunch, range balls and use of cart are included in the entry fee of $100 per player, or $360 per four-person team. Mulligans and throws also will be available for purchase.

Players also will have a chance to hit a hole-in-one and win a car donated by Wilder Auto Center.

Sponsors also are needed for the tournament at levels ranging from $125 on up.

All proceeds will benefit Wilder Baseball Club, the Port Angeles-based youth baseball organization that fields two summer ball baseball teams for high-school age youth on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Member-Guest

Recently, Peninsula Golf Club held its 2017 Member-Guest Tournament, attracting 18 teams for a two-day tourney.

Mark Mitrovich, former longtime coach of the Port Angeles boys golf team, is a Peninsula member and he teamed with Cedars at Dungeness’ Sid Krumpe to claim first.

Mitrovich and Krumpe (131) won by eight strokes against Jade Tisdale and Tracy Dunlap.

Suzanne Owens and Cathy Clackson won the net title with a score of 122, three strokes better than Jay Kalla and Joe Hudson.

Erick Blume and Craig Lawrence were third at 126, and the teams of Paul Reed and Jay Keohokalole and Eric Schaefermeyer and Kyle Stutesman tied for fourth at 128.

Sixkiller classic

University of Washington athletic greats make their annual return trip to the North Olympic Peninsula for the Seventh Annual Sonny Sixkiller Husky Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto Center.

Sixkiller leads a strong field of Husky celebrities playing at Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim.

A dinner to honor the celebrities will be held at 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn on Thursday starting at 5 p.m.

A limited number of tickets are available by calling 360-417-7144. Fans are also invited to attend the tournament — scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. — free of charge.
