GOLF: Sonny Sixkiller celebrity tournament returning to Cedars at Dungeness

The 14th annual Sonny Sixkiller Celebrity Golf Classic presented by Wilder Auto Center, which features a host of former University of Washington coaches and players, will be held on July 25 at Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course.

Sonny Sixkiller, the dynamic quarterback who turned around the University of Washington football program in the early 1970s, started the tournament in conjunction with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.

Sixkiller was the quarterback who turned around the Huskies football program, leading the nation in passing in 1970. He also was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on Oct. 4, 1971. In a recent poll, he was named one of the top 10 Pac-10 quarterbacks of all time.

“We are delighted to be a part of this tournament — we think it will be the premier sporting event on the Peninsula,” said Jerry Allen, the CEO of 7 Cedars Casino. “We have been very fortunate to partner with Sonny for the past 14 years.”

He has lined up a who’s who list of 36 Husky legends to play in the tournament, including former Miami Dolphins quarterback Damon Huard, former Chicago Bears fullback Robin Earl, All-NFL Lineman Lincoln Kennedy and Seattle media personality Mike “The Gasman” Gastineau.

Also participating will be former Port Angeles High School football player Scott Jones, who is the only Roughrider to have played in the NFL, that coming after a successful career as a tight end and offensive tackle at Washington. He will be joined by Huskies baseballers Matt Lane and Brandon Irvine from Port Angeles, and Derrin Doty from Sequim.

“I had always wanted to set up a tournament to showcase the legacy of University of Washington sports, especially football,” Sixkiller said. “I am extremely pleased to be able to work with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe once again and am happy that it will benefit the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.”

A native of Ashland, Ore., Sixkiller played for The Hawaiians in the World Football League and was a cast member in the original movie production of “The Longest Yard” with Burt Reynolds. He currently is the senior associate general manager for the Washington ISP Sports Network.
