SEQUIM’S ALEX MCMENAMIN, a junior on the George Fox University women’s golf team, recently competed in the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships.
McMenamin, a prep standout who earned All-Peninsula Girls Golf MVP honors after all four of her high school seasons for the Wolves, finished in the middle of the pack last week at Houston’s Bay Oaks Country Club.
She fired rounds of 77, 81, 78 and 81 to tie for 41st (+29) in the 81-player field (after cuts) as she and her Bruins’ teammates finished in a tie for seventh as a team (+97) and 32 shots back of the championship winners, New York University.
McMenamin was grinding in all four of her rounds, carding pars on 39 of the 72 holes and making four birdies.
While in Houston for the championships, McMenamin recorded her first honor as a Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American and All-Region selection. She was named as an honorable mention on the WGCA All-American list. McMenamin ranked No. 23 among Division III golfers with a compare record of 687 and a scoring average of 77.18.
Spring Shotgun
Spots are going fast for Peninsula Golf Club’s 58th annual Spring Shotgun Invitational Tournament this weekend at the Port Angeles course.
The 36-hole two-person shamble event includes a practice round Friday and 10 a.m. shotgun starts Saturday and Sunday.
Hors d’oeuvres will be served following Saturday’s play at 3:30 p.m. before a 4 p.m. Calcutta competition.
Players receive a free KP on the pro shop’s full-swing simulator, a practice round with spouse, tee prizes, cash KPs, an optional honey pot, lunch and drink tickets and freeplay and food vouchers provided by 7 Cedars Casino.
The maximum handicap is 36 — with an eight-stroke differential.
The cost is $260 per team.

River Center golf tourney
The first Dungeness River Audubon Center Charity Golf Tournament will be held at The Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim on Saturday, June 15.
Proceeds from the four-person scramble event will fund capital improvements at the center including expanding the existing building by 5,000 square feet and adding classrooms, dedicated meeting space, a commercial kitchen, a new entrance from an expanded parking lot as well as allowing for a dedicated space for the center’s educational exhibits.
The tournament fee is $100 per player and includes prizes, golf and lunch.

PGA Jr. League
Registration is underway for the Olympic Peninsula PGA Jr. League program for youth ages 13 and younger.
All skill levels from beginner to experienced are welcome to play in the league, which will begin June 11 at The Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim and Port Angeles’ Peninsula Golf Club.
PGA Jr. League is a way for kids to learn and play golf while bringing friends and family together to enjoy golf experiences with expert coaching and instruction from PGA and LPGA professionals, according to Peninsula head pro Chad Wagner.
Boys and girls compete in a two-person scramble format that encourages mentorship, attempts to build confidence and promotes sportsmanship.
More than 50,000 kids participated on 4,200 teams nationwide according to the PGA Jr. League, in 2018.
Players will participate in eight team practice sessions and four regular season matches during the eight-week program.
High-performing players can advance to postseason all-star teams.
A small bucket of golf balls is included daily and players also will get 15 percent pro shop discounts and deals with other junior golf programs.
Players also will receive a performance T-shirt, hat, bag tag, stickers and a drawstring bag and two jerseys, orange and blue, for home and away competition.
Jerseys are available in boys and girls sizes and customizable with team name and the preferred jersey number.
The fee is $200.
