GOLF: Port Ludlow hosts U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier

Sequim’s Sweet shoots 3-over-par 75, ties for 16th

PORT LUDLOW — Gavyn Knight of Parksville, B.C., shot a 3-under-par 69 to earn medalist honors at a U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier hosted by Port Ludlow Golf Course on Tuesday.

Knight, 18, had six birdies on his round, overcoming a double-bogey on the par-4 seventh hole and a bogey on the par-3 14th, to triumph over a field of 84 players.

The Boise State University-commit advances to the 2022 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which takes place July 25-30 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.

The other four spots available at this qualifier were secured by Joshua Ince of Surrey, BC., Akshay Anand of Issaquah, and Justin Bjornson of Surrey, B.C., all shooting 2-under 70.

Alex Zhang of Richmond, B.C., survived a one-hole playoff for the fifth and final spot.

Anand recently won the 2022 WIAA Class 4A state championship for Redmond. He has signed a letter of intent to play golf for Northwestern University.

Sequim’s Ben Sweet shot a round of 3-over-par 75 to finish in a tie for 16th. Sweet finished second at the Class 2A state championship last month and will play for Whitman University in Walla Walla this fall.

Cedars women

SEQUIM — Kim Mishko’s hole-in-one on the fourth highlighted Cedars at Dungeness Women’s Golf Association’s Tuesday game of 333.

Players counted the best three holes from the par-3s, the par-4s and par-5s to arrive at a total.
