PORT TOWNSEND — The Jim Caldwell Memorial Rhody Festival Golf tournaments raised more than $4,500 this month for the Rhododendron Festival royalty scholarship fund.
A total of 108 golfers participated in three tournaments held at the Port Townsend Public Golf Course during last week’s Rhody Festival. Individual donations from the golfers were matched by the Caldwell family and supplemented through local sponsorships.
The initial event, held May 13, hosted 24 golfers in an individual stroke play tournament. The gross score winners were Dylan Stanfield, first, and Robert Horner, second.
Net score winners were Ben Krabill, first, Al West and Tim Caldwell, second, and Doug Collins, fourth. Calloway score winners were Rita Beebe, first, and Becky Beebe, second.
On Saturday, 56 golfers participated in a 9-hole, two-person scramble. The event was shortened to nine holes in order to make sure the tournament concluded before the start of the grand parade. Golfers ranged in age from 8 to 80 and enjoyed sunny weather.
The winning team with the lowest gross score was Robert Horner and Gabriel Tonan. Second place went to Eric Nelson and Jeremiah Fountain. The low net winning teams were Terry Berg and Peggy Tonan, first, Al West and Buddy O’Meara, second, and Bobby Dean and Mike Lux, third.
The Calloway Division winners were Tom and Ryan Olson, first, Zack Dean and Steve Grimm, second, Greg and Carter Caldwell, third, and Rita and Joey Beebe, fourth.
The Sunday event, an 18-hole, two-person best-ball tournament, was played under cloudy skies that failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the 28 golfers who braved the threatening weather to post the lowest scores of the three events.
The first-place low gross trophy went to Hazli Katsikapes and Nathan Segerson with a 1-under-par 69. The net score winners were Keegan and Terry Khile (57), first, and Tim and Greg Caldwell (62), second.
Calloway score winners were Gabriel Tonan and Kelvin Kisner (70), first, and Chris Cardinaz and Cody Hewitt (72), second. Special awards for closest to the pin went to Bob Chandler and longest putt to Kelvin Kisner.
