DONNA MACLEAN CLIMBED to the top of the Cedars at Dungeness Lady Niners leaderboard, winning the group’s club championship this year.
Lady Niners member Lindsay Busch passed along that MacLean joined the group in 2012, after first taking many lessons from the teaching professionals at Cedars and putting in the right amount of practice time to grow her game.
The work paid off last season with MacLean tying for the club’s Most Improved Golfer award.
This year, Lady Niners members switched the format of the club championship from match play to a low net format played over two nine-hole rounds.
MacLean’s consistent play landed her in first place with a net total of 65 and also scored her the lowest gross total in the field, an 89.
Originally from Boston, MacLean became a nurse and spent most of her career as one of the first critical care nurses in the nation.
She has a connection to medical history as well after caring for the first adult heart transplant patient in the country at Stanford University hospital in 1968.
MacLean moved to Sequim when she retired in 2007 and became more serious about her golf game.
She lives in Sequim with her partner Kathi White.
Her favorite aspect of golf is the ability to do something athletic in the beautiful outdoors on the North Olympic Peninsula.

OCS tourney a hit
Another year, another successful Friends of Olympic Christian School Charity Golf Tournament.
A full turnout of 100 golfers competed in the event earlier this summer at Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim.
The scramble format event offered golfers a shot at more than $40,000 in prizes for hole in one and other competitions.
Every par-three hole provided a chance at $5,000 for an ace, with a new Scion Tc from Wilder Auto Center up for grabs on hole No. 17.
Ultimately, no players carded singles, so better luck next year.
A $400 gift certificate award for the lowest gross score was won by the team of Jack Heckman, John Tweeter, Justin Ketchum, and Mike Dupuis with a score of 51.
Their team was sponsored by Northwest Inside/Out Painting.
The Olympic Christian School Eagle Flight low net score prize of $400 was won by the team of James Alcaraz, Fred Harrison, Keynon Fanslow, and Zach Lund with a net score of 53.
Their team was sponsored by RealEstateinSequim.com.
Cyndi Knutson won both the long drive for women and the straightest drive among all golfers.
She attributed her success to recent lessons from Cedars head golf pro Garrett Smithson.
Smithson’s team of himself, Chad Wagner, Garrett Payton and Alex Atwell won the inaugural Pro Challenge Flight, which included a plaque and bragging rights for one year.
Following the tournament, the golfers and more than 30 adult and children volunteers from Olympic Christian School enjoyed a barbecue lunch, awards ceremony and a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses.
The third annual Friends of Olympic Christian School Charity Golf Tournament will be held on the Saturday of Lavender Festival weekend in July 2015.
Daisy and Duke tourney
The Daisy and Duke Four-Person Scramble tournament will be held at SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim on Saturday.
The event serves as a benefit for the scholarship fund of the Philanthropic Education Organization’s EP Chapter.
This fund provides local women with continuing education as well as new college opportunities.
Entry is $65 per player and includes golf, use of cart, range balls, and a lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, salad and chips.
The event also includes muffins and coffee at tee off, home-baked chocolate chip cookies and water at the turn and an award ceremony following play.
Mulligans and magic putts are $5 each and a putting contest has a $5 per person buy-in.
Raffle tickets are $1.
Registration opens at 9 a.m., the putting contest is 9:30 a.m., with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

Elks best ball in PT
Port Townsend Golf Club will host the 18th annual Elks Two-Person Best Ball tournament Saturday.
Individual prizes are planned for the low Elk member and nonmember gross and net.
Cost is $35 per player with green fees of $10 for nonmembers.
Tee off is at 9 a.m., and proceeds benefit scholarship for area youth.
The Jefferson County Bar Association will host a four-person scramble at Port Townsend on Saturday, Sept. 20.
This tournament also funds scholarships for area youth.

SkyRidge scramble
SkyRidge will hold a three-person scramble tourney with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Cost is $90 per team ($30 per player), with a $20 per player honey pot available.
Each player will be responsible for four drives in the 18-hole event.
Gross and net prizes are planned, and lunch will follow play.
Team KP’s and long- putt prizes also will be contested.
Carts are available for $15 per seat.
