GOLF: Discovery Bay planning to tee it forward

DISCOVERY BAY GOLF Club head pro Jeff Kent checked in with a number of items and events to watch out for at the Port Townsend-area course.

Weekly league play will be held on Thursday evenings with a 5:30 p.m. start time.

Kent said league play will begin in late April or early May and will consist of four-person teams with the option of signing up as a team or scoring as an individual.

In a bid to boost participation, the course will add new “Tee it Forward” tee areas.

“These tees will accomodate players with slower swing speeds to help them enjoy the game more,” Kent said.

Tee it Forward is currently being promoted by the PGA of America and the USGA. The golf course will be re-rated in June for existing tees and new forward tees.

The program promotes playing golf from a set of tees that is best suited toward the player’s average driving distance.

Playing from forward tees should result in fewer overall shots, shorter distance traveled on each hole, and potentially, fewer lost balls.

Kent will offer weekly clinics in the coming weeks.

He also said a new fleet of Yamaha golf carts will arrive soon.

Cedars going big

Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim will host its fourth annual spring edition of its Go Big Golf Tournament on Saturday.

Everything is oversized for this event, from 8-inch cups on each hole, foot-long hot dogs and 22-ounce beers, sodas and waters.

The one-man scramble, which allows for players to use two mulligans per hole, will tee off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

This one is open to all and there will be Callaway, gross and net divisions.

Green fees are $55 for the public and include competition, range balls and lunch.

Cost is $32 for Cedars members and employees.

Carts are an extra charge.

March Madness special

Port Ludlow Golf Club is offering a March Madness special during the entirety of this basketball-crazed month.

Walkers can pay $25 for 18 holes and get a hot dog, soda and chips.

Use of a GPS cart ups the price to $35, still a steal and a slam dunk for those looking for a good golf value.

Softball tourney reset

A new date is set for the Sequim Softball Booster Club’s Golf for Softball tourney, now slated for Saturday, April 8, at SkyRidge Golf Course, 7015 Old Olympic Highway.

The tourney, a four-person scramble, has a shotgun start at 9 a.m. — check-in at 8 a.m. Cost is $50 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, range balls and barbecue lunch. Carts are $15 per seat.

More than $2,000 worth of raffle prizes are up for grabs, event organizers say; tickets are one for $5 or five for $20.The tourney has a 20-team maximum.

Money raised by this event helps pay for the Sequim High fastpitch team’s tournament fees and travel expenses.
