THE ALL-PENINSULA Boys and Girls golf MVPs, Sequim’s Paul Jacobsen and Sarah Shea, have opened their summer seasons by playing in a couple of big-time tournaments here in Western Washington.
Jacobsen tried his luck at qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur in a qualifier event held on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain last Wednesday — finishing 20 shots behind Snoqualmie’s Drew Warford, who shot a 2-under-par 70 and won by one stroke.
Shea is competing in the Washington State Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur at Lake Spanaway Golf Course through Thursday.
Shea will play for Western Washington University starting this fall.
At the amateur, Shea is competing against players like Brittany Kwon, who won her third straight Class 3A state golf title for Central Kitsap in May, and Kenedee Peters, a Washington State University-bound player who Shea was paired with in the opening round of the Class 2A state tournament (and which Peters won).
Clallam Amateur
The pair could be part of the upcoming Clallam County Amateur, a three-day, three-round, three course tournament in which Jacobsen finished second last July to Shea’s older brother and Western Washington men’s golfer, Jack Shea, in last year’s Clallam County Amateur.
It was Jack’s second straight Clallam County Amateur victory.
The 2018 version of the Clallam County Amateur is coming up Friday through Sunday, July 6-8 with rounds at Peninsula Golf Club, SunLand Golf & Country Club and The Cedars at Dungeness.
Open to all amateur golfers with a valid USGA handicap, the event has a $110 fee for the public, $90 for club members.
The fee includes all three rounds of golf, range balls and a meal along with the Sunday round.
Tee times are: 11 a.m. at Peninsula Golf Club on Friday, July 6; 9 a.m. at SunLand on July 7 and a 9 a.m. shotgun at Cedars on July 8.
Players will compete for a total of $3,500 in prizes, including $1,500 from sponsors.
Golfers also will have a shot at a $5,000 hole-in-one prize each day and $3,000 in raffle prizes will be handed out during the weekend.
Daily honeypots and KP prizes also will be up for grabs.

League champs
The first half of Discovery Bay’s Thursday evening league play wrapped last week with the Cape Beer squad taking first place — headed up by Neil Lupkes, Greg Rutz, Bruce Klock, Mike Field, Tone Madsen, Chris Wenger and Don Rogers.
The Eldridge Construction crew of Roy Sutherland, Zeke St. Clair, Bob Hicks, Jim Fultz and Dave Bueter were second and the Shold Excavating team of Rob Miller, Mark Ajax, Justin Mason, Bob Eldridge, Jim Eldridge and Kevin Miller were third.
Discovery Bay head pro Jeff Kent says it’s not too late to join the second half of league play which begins Thursday, July 5.

Weekly special
Discovery Bay is offering 20 percent off green fees for groups of three or more through Sunday — just mention the special when checking in to play.
Red, White and Blue Scramble
Discovery Bay will celebrate Independence Day by hosting a four-person Red, White and Blue Scramble and Pot Luck at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 4.
All players are invited to participate. The Discovery Bay Men’s Club will provide burgers after play. Golfers should bring a dish.
There is a $10 entry fee plus the Discovery Bay green fee.
Men will play from a combination of the course’s Red, White and Blue tees. Women will tee it up from the Silver, Red and Gold tees.
Discovery Bay also has super-twilight rates of $12 after 5 p.m.
Stars and Stripes
SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim will host its annual Stars and Stripes Golf Tournament, a two-person, 27-hole event with three separate formats, Saturday, July 7.
A 9 a.m. shotgun start will begin event which features a first nine of better ball, a second nine of scramble play and a final nine holes of alternate shot.
Cost is $90 per team and entries are limited to the first 28 teams to register.
The price includes green fees, range balls, KP and long putt contests and lunch.
A $20 honey pot is available per person and carts are $15 per seat.

Ludlow specials
Port Ludlow has a number of active golf specials.
Early-birds can tee off before 8 a.m. and receive 18 holes of golf, use of a GPS cart and a sleeve of Titleist Pro V’s for $49.95 (plus tax) through Aug. 31.
Late risers can take advantage of Port Ludlow’s twilight special with tee times for two players and a GPS cart running for $60 from 4 p.m. to 4:59 p.m. and $50 after 5 p.m.
Active duty military members can walk the course for $20 per round or use a cart for $35. Just present your active duty military ID at check-in.
A July 4th special for Independence Day only is $39.95 plus tax for a green fee and cart rental with tee times starting after 10 a.m.
