GIRLS’ WRESTLING: Forks’ Ensastegui takes first at sub-regionals

CHEHALIS — Forks’ picked up a heavy amount of points from the lower weight classes to earn a tie for fourth at the WIAA Girls North Sub-Regional on Friday at W.F. West High School.

The Spartans sent two wrestlers to the finals of the 100-pound weight class in Karen Ensastegui and Iesha Johnson.

Ensastegui pinned her teammate just before the bell at the end of the first round at 1:58 to claim the sub-regional championship.

The victory was Ensastegui’s third win by pin on the day. After receiving a first-round bye, Ensastegui pinned Life Christian’s May Kwok at 2:32 and Centralia’s Jade Hudson at 3:46 of their semifinal match.

Johnson advanced with a bye, an 18-5 major decision win over Castle Rock’s Makayla Wilbur and a late pin at 5:37 over Aberdeen’s Rhianne Cline.

Elizabeth Jackson-Cruz went 2-1 and finished third for the Spartans, battling back after a 12-9 quarterfinal defeat against Aberdeen’s Aaliyah Whitefoot and later beating Whitefoot for third with a pin at 1:27 of the first round.

Annhelica Wells went 2-1 to finish as runner-up in the 110-pound division.

Wells won a 9-1 major decision against Aberdeen’s Aili Scott and picked up a pin against Black Hills’ Olivia Toussaint at 2:40 to reach the finals.

Castle Rock’s Kylee Jacobs pinned Wells at 3:56 to claim the championship.

Christina Udave (1-2 at 115), Eugenia Elena (0-2 at 140), Brenna King (2-2 at 140) and Litzy Recinos (0-2 at 145) also competed for Forks.

The Spartans will compete at Regionals at Hoquiam High School on Saturday.
