SEQUIM — In a matchup of Olympic League girls tennis unbeatens,, Sequim (9-0) remained at the top of the pack, extending its league unbeaten stretch to 30 matches with a 5-2 win over rival Port Angeles (8-1) in each team’s regular season finale.
The Wolves won their final four league matches in 2018 after an April 24 loss to North Kitsap, went undefeated at 16-0 in 2019, missed 2020 to COVID and wrapped the 2021 season at 10-0.
Sequim swept the singles matches in straight sets as No. 1 Kalli Wiker beat Port Angeles’ Liberty Lauer 6-0, 6-1, Olivia Preston won the No. 2 match over Emma Olsen 6-1, 6-4 and Melissa Porter knocked off Hannah Basden 6-1, 6-1.
The Wolves No. 1 duo of McKenna Hastings and Kendall Hastings defeated the Riders’ Hannah Reetz and Shannon Callahan 6-2, 6-0 while Allie Gale and Amanda Weller teamed to beat Port Angeles’ Reagan and Eden Critchfield 6-4, 6-3.
Kinnley Brady and Ellie Getchell triumphed for the Riders in the No. 3 doubles match 6-0, 6-3 over Sequim’s Mallory Morey and Sydney Sandstrom. Port Angeles’ Angelina Sprague and Brielle Keywood topped the Wolves No. 4 duo of Lindsay Swanson and Jordyn Hegtvedt.
The Olympic League Girls Tennis Championships will be played at Central Kitsap on Wednesday and Thursday.
North Kitsap 4, East Jefferson 3
CHIMACUM — East Jefferson swept all three singles matches, but couldn’t claim a doubles win and fell in its final Olympic League contest of the season.
Maddie Hess was a 6-0, 6-1 winner in the No. 1 singles contest, Juniper Cervenka came out on top in the No. 2 singles match 7-6, 6-0 and No. 3 Myka Briggs won 6-0, 6-1.
East Jefferson finished 4-6 on the season.
Boys Soccer Klahowya 2, Port Angeles 0
SILVERDALE — The Riders played well but couldn’t find the net in a loss to the Eagles.
“PA played some of their best overall soccer of the year in terms of possession passing, switching the ball and getting their outside backs involved at Klahowya Thursday night,” coach Chris Saari said. “The game was evenly matched and end to end with both teams creating some good scoring opportunities.”
A Klahowya goal in the 31st minute by Michael Divano put the Eagles up 1-0.
“Josiah Long had a good chance for PA in the first half when he beat several players on the left side of the penalty box, but put his shot wide of the near post into the side netting,” Saari said.
Saari said the Riders changed their formation late to try and generate some offense and the Eagles managed to score in the 73rd minute when Matthew Frank spun his defender and put a shot in off the far post.
“The Riders had quality chances in both halves, but were not able to capitalize on their opportunities,” Saari said. “There was definite progress in Port Angeles passing game and it was good to see, but the result still left the Riders searching for a win.”
Saari’s players of the match included Sean Rankin and Logan Desser on defense, Damon Gundersen in transition and Hayden Desser on offense.
“Sean Rankin was rock solid at the back,” Saari said. “Damon Gundersen was all over the field in central midfield for the Riders. Hayden Desser distributed the ball very well for PA from the forward position. Rider goalie Logan Desser came up big on a save off the line in the second half that was curling to the near post off a corner kick to keep PA in the game.”
Port Angeles (3-7) wraps the season Friday with a match at North Mason.
Golf East Jefferson 201, Crosspoint 212
PORT LUDLOW — East Jefferson earned a 207-212 boys golf win over Crosspoint on the par-36 front nine at Port Ludlow Golf Course.
Braley Phillips led the way with a round of 43, Wilder Lewis added a 46, Cade Martin a 58 and Lane Liske a 60.
Alyssa Vandenberg shot a 64 while playing against Crosspoint’s Sophia Mills (58).
