SEQUIM — Sequim edged East Jefferson 86-72 in an Olympic League girls swim meet Wednesday at the Sequim YMCA.
“It was a great meet with very even competition between each team,” Sequim coach Sarah Thorson said. “All girls fought hard for the duration of the meet. The highlighted events of the meet would be the 500-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke, both of which were close races, with Sequim coming out ahead.”
Sequim’s Annie Ellefson posted a time of 1 minute, 19.99 seconds to squeak past East Jefferson’s Akeyla Behrenfeld (1:20.79) in the 100 breaststroke.
Ellefson also won the 200 free with a time of 2:23.82.
Behrenfeld earned a win in the 100 freestyle in 1:02.96, ahead of Sequim’s Keira Morey (1:10.3).
Morey was first in the 50 freestyle in 31.32, edging East Jefferson’s Stella Bosley (31.64).
Ava Shinkle claimed the 500 freestyle in 6:11.81 with the race for second coming down to .21 seconds between East Jefferson’s Serena Hanby-Perless (6:34.1) and Sequim’s Melia Nelson (6:34.31).
Shinkle also won the 100 butterfly (1:08.19).
The Rivals swim at Bremerton today.
Sequim hosts Kingston on Wednesday.
Bainbridge 117, Port Angeles 65
PORT ANGELES — Despite a setback against powerhouse Bainbridge, the Roughriders swam with determination, racking up several season-best performances.
“With a record of 5-1, the team showed they remain a force to be reckoned with in the pool,” coach Sally Cole said.
Although the Roughriders didn’t take the win, Cole was proud of the team’s determination.
“We faced a strong Bainbridge squad, but our girls gave it everything they had. The number of season-high performances today shows how much they’ve grown,”Cole said.
The competition opened with the 200 medley relay, where the Roughriders’ squad of Brooke St. Luise, Lizzy Shaw, Amayah Nelson and Danika Asgeirsson earned 3rd place. Port Angeles quickly responded in the 200 Freestyle, dominating the race with Nelson taking 1st and Lynzee Reid close behind in 2nd, demonstrating their strength against the Spartans.
Bainbridge, however, pushed back in the 200 Individual Medley, securing 1st and 2nd places. Damun Seera finished third for Port Angeles and Grace Williams came in fourth, keeping the Riders in the game. In the 50 freestyle, Sally Kasten finished fourth, setting a new personal record.
Reid shone in diving, earning the win and adding key points to the Roughriders’ score.
In the 100 Butterfly, Asgeirsson delivered a strong third-place finish with her fastest time of the season, while Shaw followed suit, clocking her top time to secure 4th in the 100 Freestyle.
The 500 freestyle turned into a showcase of Port Angeles’ endurance. Nelson raced to victory, shaving over 10 seconds off her previous best.
Emerson DuBois came in fifth with a four second improvement, while freshman Lucy Townsend dropped 3.5 seconds from her previous time, showing promise for the future.
In the relay events, the Roughrider team of Kasten, Chloe Kay-Sanders, Reid and DuBois were second in the 200 freestyle relay.
Co-captains St. Luise and Asgeirsson both posted their best times of the season in the 100 backstroke, finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. Shaw claimed 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke, with freshman Mia Francia right behind her in fourth improving her own time significantly.
The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relay, where the team of Reid, Nelson, St. Luise and Asgeirsson finished second.
Port Angeles hosts North Kitsap today.
