SEQUIM — Yau Fu claimed two individual events and contributed to two relay victories as Port Angeles surged to a convincing 124-39 Olympic League girls swim meet win over rival Sequim on Wednesday at the Sequim YMCA.
“Port Angeles triumphed in 10 out of 11 events,” Roughriders coach Sally Cole said. “The meet’s standout performance came from Yau Fu, who not only secured a victory but also achieved a state-qualifying time in the 100-yard butterfly.”
Fu teamed with Danika Asgiersson, Brook St. Luise and Harper McGuire to win the opening event, the 200 medley relay, in 2 minutes, 6.31 seconds, 15 seconds faster than Sequim’s Melia Nelson, Ava Shinkle, Natalie Cross and Addison Long.
Lynzee Reid followed with a win in the 200 freestyle for Port Angeles, improving her personal best time by 2 seconds (2:16.63).
Port Angeles continued to maintain firm control of the meet, sweeping the 200 individual medley with Amayah Nelson, Chloe Kay-Sanders and Oliva Mesen taking the top three spots.
Fu added a win in the 50 free to the Riders’ tally with Lizzy Shaw, just 0.05 seconds behind and Sequim’s Shinkle in third.
“Fu continued to shine as she soared to victory in the 100 fly, clocking a state-qualifying time and leaving Sequim in her wake by a remarkable 7-second gap,” Cole said.
Cole said McGuire was another standout performer for Port Angeles, placing first in the 100 free and improving her time by 1.07 seconds to 58.61 seconds. Shaw was second in 1:03.57, outpacing the Wolves’ Keira Morey (1:15:07).
“The Roughriders displayed their depth in the middle of the meet, claiming both first and second positions in the 200 free relay,” Cole said.
“The team of Shaw, Asgeirsson, Fu and McGuire clinched the top spot, while St. Luise, Emerson DuBois, Nelson and Reid secured a solid second.”
Port Angeles swept the podium in the 100 backstroke as McGuire, Asgeirsson and Reid, took first, second and third, respectively.
To end the individual events, the Roughriders again claimed a clean sweep in the 100 breast. St. Luise touched in first, followed by Mesen and Brooke Coville.
Port Angeles capped off the impressive performance with its 400 free relay teams securing first and second place.
The quartet of Nelson, Flora Sullivan, Reid and Shaw nabbed first, while Brooke Coville, DuBois, Seera and Kay-Sanders grabbed second, outpacing Sequim by just 2 seconds.
Cross won the 500 free for Sequim with a time of 6:23.06, more than a minute ahead of Kay-Sanders’ 7:26.15.
Port Angeles (4-1) hosts East Jefferson on Wednesday.
Sequim (2-1, 3-1) hosts North Kitsap today.
