POULSBO — The Port Angeles girls swim team emerged victorious over North Kitsap on the road this weekend, beating their strong rival 105-73.
The Roughriders started off slowly, but rallied in the late session to secure the victory, according to coach Sally Cole.
The meet began with the Vikings taking an early lead, as the Riders struggled. In the first half of the competition, Port Angeles only managed to clinch the top spot in one event — the 200 freestyle, with Harper McGuire taking home the win.
At the end of the first session, the Riders found themselves trailing by one point. They quickly turned the tide in the second half. Yau Fu started the comeback, claiming a crucial six points by finishing first in the 100 butterfly. From that point on, the Riders never looked back, securing four more first-place finishes.
The 500 freestyle event was a triumphant sweep for the Roughriders, with Lynzee Reid, Chloe Kay-Sanders and Damun Seers taking the top three spots. Their collective effort earned 12 points for Port Angeles as all three swimmers achieved personal-best times for the season.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Lizzy Shaw, Danika Asgeirsson, Fu and McGuire maintained the momentum by grabbing first and adding another eight points to Port Angeles’ tally.
Brooke St. Luise contributed to the team’s comeback by taking first in the 100 backstroke and Fu showcased her versatility by claiming the top spot in diving.
The standout performer of the meet was Asgeirsson, according to Cole. She set personal season records in both of her individual events, the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, shaving two seconds in each event. Her excellence extended to the relays, where she also swam personal best splits.
Up next Port Angeles will host the Olympic League Divisionals meet at 3 p.m. at the Shore Aquatic Center.
