SEQUIM — The Sequim girls soccer team will go into tonight’s match against Rainshadow Rival Port Angeles with a lot of momentum after a 6-1 win over Olympic.
“A win at home is always a great feeling. The atmosphere was a little different this time since we played earlier in the day than usual, and the warm weather definitely tested us mentally,” said assistant coach Vianey Cadenas.
Sasha Yada put the Wolves on the scoreboard early in the first half after she was set up by a great run from defender Brooklyn Schmidt. A few minutes later, Adalie Eastburn scored.
“The second half was where the team really came together. We knew we’d have to work smarter and harder to get results, and the girls rose to the challenge,” Cadenas said.
Ruby Moxley-Horgan extended the lead off an assist from Olive Bridge to start off the Wolves in the second half, and Eastburn earned her second goal in the 55th minute from a Lily Sparks setup. Raimey Brewer got on the board with help from Kiley Winter. Hailey Wagner closed things out after a brilliant ball played forward by Winter, Cadenas said.
“Bridge and Winter have both been brilliant for us. They’re such relentless fighters and can out-hustle just about anyone,” Cadenas said. “What I love most about our team this season is the scoring is spread across the roster. We’re not relying on one or two players. Every player on this team has the ability to make something happen, and that makes us tough to play against.”
Sequim (2-2, 2-3) next plays Port Angeles (2-1, 4-1) at 7:15 p.m. tonight at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College.
East Jefferson 8, Forks 2
PORT TOWNSEND — The East Jefferson girls got big games from Akili Clevenger and Macy Little, beating Forks 8-2.
Clevenger had a hat trick while Little had two goals and three assists. Little got two of her goals on corner kicks, assisted by Fern French. French also had a goal, as did Savvy Grimm and Rayna Pray. Gracie Witheridge added an assist.
The Rivals (0-1-1, 2-4-1) led 4-0 in the first 10 minutes and took a 6-1 lead into the half. Coach Robert Cantley said he put in some of his junior varsity players in the second half to give them some experience.
Forks got off to a late start this season because the school was searching for a coach, so this was just the Spartans’ second game of the year. The first was a 6-0 win over Hoquiam.
“They’re really tough, hard runners,” Cantley said.
Cantley said the match was a good tuneup for a tough match coming up today against Annie Wright (3-0-0). That match will be played at 4:30 p.m. at Port Townsend Memorial Stadium.
Forks (1-1) plays at Raymond-South Bend today.
6-Man Football Crescent 51, Neah Bay JV 14
JOYCE — The Crescent football team got five touchdowns and more than 300 all-purpose yards from Mikah Love in beating the Neah Bay JV in six-man football, improving its record to 4-0.
Love finished with six receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns of 52, 42 and 10 yards. He had two pick sixes, including one that went for 61 yards, on defense.
Liam Sprague had two touchdown runs, including one for 35 yards, while Conner Avrett scored on a 10-yard run.
Quarterback Jax Sprague threw 12-for-17 for 282 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.
Liam Sprague ran five times for 79 yards, while Avrett ran five times for 48 yards. Wyatt Bauer caught two passes for 27 yards.
“We’re young, athletic, little guys. We’re fast and hungry,” said coach Brian Shimko. “We’re young, so playing six man is good for building their confidence, but I can see us going back to eight man next year.”
Crescent hosts Lake Quinault at 1 p.m.
The Neah Bay varsity is off this weekend and plays Oct. 3 against a tough Darrington team.
