SEQUIM — Taryn Johnson scored the tying goal three minutes from the end of regulation for Sequim and the Wolves shut down North Kitsap in two overtime periods, but fell 2-2 (4-2) in a penalty kick shootout at home Tuesday.
“I felt our girls played really well, we stuck to our game plan, stayed compact on defense and didn’t get pulled out of shape and were able to counter,” coach Ken Garling said.
“We battled back and forth that whole second half and were able to get tied up in the 77th minute when Hailey Wagner sent in a free kick from about 30 to 35 yards out into a dangerous area. Aliyah Weber knocked it back to Taryn and she looped it up and over the top from behind the 18-yad box.”
Sequim had a good look at a goal in overtime when Johnson found Teagan Moore on a run and Moore sent off a ripping shot to the right post that was only saved at the last second by North Kitsap.
Wagner and Johnson also connected on a free kick to put the Wolves up 1-0 early.
“Hailey just put a beautiful ball in up over the top of the 18 and Taryn Johnson, the timing of her run was perfect. The volley came over the top and she one-touched volleyed it right in. It was one of the prettiest goals I’ve seen in a long time.”
Garling was pleased with his squad’s play.
“Our girls played solidly,” he said. “I’m really proud of how Hailey Wagner stepped up and was instrumental in our goal scoring opportunities, she’s really progressed nicely.”
Port Angeles 5, Olympic 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders settled in and shut out the Trojans after a slow start to the match.
“We used the first 15 minutes to warm up because our warmup was off,” coach Daniel Horton said.
“But we started to take care of the ball and take advantage of our possessions and started to string four, five or six passes together and Kedryn Descala got our first goal in the 31st minute. She’s been playing so well for us at striker, when she is active and aggressive it is a big difference maker.
“When she is playing like someone that will score instead of can score, it helps us play at another level.”
Anna Petty put Port Angeles up 2-0 at halftime four minutes later, scoring off an assist by Izzy Felton.
Julia Baeder scored off a scrum following a corner kick in the 52nd minute.
Freshman Piper Alton drew a penalty kick in the 68th minute. She also converted on the attempt for a 4-0 lead.
“Somebody played her a great through ball and Piper had to fight off contact to get the ball, to keep possession and once she got to the box they fouled her,” Horton said.
“Anna Petty, 99 times out of 100 is going to take that kick. But Anna said ‘Let Piper take it.’ We looked at it, senior leader or freshman, and we heard Anna tell us again to ‘Let Piper take it.’
Petty was rewarded for her selflessness with a 77th minute goal.
Saylah Commerton earned the shut out in goal, making a couple of tough saves in the second half.
“Lily [Sanders] and Kennedy [Rognlien] as our center backs and Izzy Felton, who has turned into our utility player, played outside wing back due to sickness and injury and she looked like she had been there for years.”
The Riders (8-2-0) visit North Kitsap (9-2-0) tonight with a chance to even the season series with the Vikings and take the inside lane to the top seed to the playoffs.
“We are all on the same page, it’s a must-win,” Horton said. “We still want that No. 1 spot, because it sets up for a better situation also know it’s a really good team.”
Klahowya 5, East Jefferson 0
PORT TOWNSEND — The Rivals made the top-ranked Eagles (10-0-0) scratch and claw for a win Tuesday.
“For the score line, we played pretty well overall. Klahowya is always a tough proposition, they are No. 1 in RPI and have a lot of quality players,” coach Robert Cantley said.
We worked on defensive organization a lot and tried to limit their chances and make it frustrating for them. Three of their five goals were shots from distance, so they weren’t slicing us open at the back.”
Cantley said his team is still without its top goalkeeper due to concussion symptoms and played emergency goalkeeper Akili Clevenger.
“She’s one of our smallest players, she only had one day of training and she made some excellent saves and really exceeded expectations,” Cantley said.
East Jefferson (5-5-2) hosts Kingston on Saturday in a nonleague match.
