SEQUIM — Sequim rallied to force overtime but couldn’t find the winning goal and fell 2-1 in a penalty-kick shootout loss to North Kitsap on Tuesday.
The Wolves trailed 1-0 at halftime, tying the game up when Hope Glasser’s kick bounced off the hand of the Vikings’ goalkeeper and Jessica Dietzman pounced on the rebound and put the ball in the net.
Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde was enthused about his team’s play.
“The team as a whole just played really well,” he said. “It’s been their best game so far and by far. They really pulled it together. They were moving the ball all over the place and you could see the confidence in their playing ability.
“I know it’s a loss as far as scorelines, but as for a team victory I felt like we are the better team. I can’t be upset with them for losing in PKs. Everybody’s shots were on frame and they made the keeper do their job.”
Sequim (1-3-0, 2-3-1) will visit North Mason (2-1-0, 2-2-0) on Tuesday.
Port Angeles 2, North Mason 1
BELFAIR — The Roughriders overcame an early deficit to stay unbeaten and in first place atop the Olympic League with a road win over the Bulldogs.
North Mason found the net in the fifth minute when Sophie Green’s hit a low, driven shot on a free kick from 45 yards out that was blocked by the Port Angeles goalkeeper but poked in on the rebound by a Bulldog forward.
Those two shots turned out to be the only shots on goal the entire game as the Riders’ defense was able to keep North Mason’s dangerous attack at bay.
Port Angeles’ Millie Long equalized the score with her 14th goal of season in the 15th minute. Delaney Wenzl played a ball over the North Mason defense that Long collected and calmly finished past goalie Morgan Mihelich.
“Mihelich is arguably the best keeper in the Olympic League and to get two goals off of her is a big accomplishment,” said coach Scott Moseley
“She had two really big saves on shots by Bailee Larson and Wenzl that most goalies would not get to.”
The Riders grabbed the lead for good three minutes later on Jada Cargo’s third goal of the year. Forward Catie Brown ran past a Bulldog defender, then hit a cross that bounced to Long. Long’s shot hit the post, which rebounded to a waiting Cargo for the game winner.
“When Millie kicked the ball and hit the post, I saw it roll and just thought to kick the ball,” Cargo said. “I ended up kicking it with my left foot and all i saw when I kicked it is the goalie got it but it slowly bounced on the line and went in. Also, it was an intense game that everyone played an equal role in [in] this win.”
The Riders ended the game with nine shots on goal to two for North Mason.
Freshman goalkeeper Saylah Commerton played the final 70 minutes to earn her first varsity win.
Moseley highlighted the play of the Rider midfield — Larson, Wenzl and Anna Petty for their work rate that helped control the game and seal the win.
Port Angeles (3-0, 6-0) hosts North Kitsap tonight at 6:45 p.m. at Civic Field.
