SEQUIM — Sequim’s Jenny Gomez and Taryn Johnson each notched braces against Kingston and their Central Washington-commit goalkeeper Leighton Menge in a 4-0 Wolves win Tuesday.
“We have been moving a few pieces around and trying to get more help up top with Taryn, and last night the girls really started figuring it out in the second half,” assistant coach Dave Breckinridge said. “Our defensive line has been really solid with Ivy Barrett, Libby Turella, Mikiah Winter and Amara Gonzalez. Those four have really come together as a whole to shut down any attacking players.
“Eve [Breithaupt] found the line and exploited it several times before making some great crosses. Olive [Bridge] also has really found herself on the pitch as well while playing along side Jenny Gomez. They have really connected in the middle and showed lots of positive play to help Taryn up top.”
Breckenridge was happy to see Gomez score.
“She has been putting in a lot of hard work in the middle,” Breckenridge said. “Taryn was the other one who seems to continually find the back of the net as well. She struggled a little finding that finish in the first half but definitely found it in the second.”
Sequim (6-1-0) hosts North Mason tonight.
East Jefferson 4, Seattle Christian 1
SEATAC — Iris Mattern and Ava Shiflett each scored a pair of goals as the Rivals rolled to a road win.
“We had to go back to the basics. The previous week we were sliding into old bad habits,” coach Rob Cantley said. “Passing and moving combinations and moving off the ball, and it paid dividends. It was definitely our best game of the season.”
East Jefferson scored twice within two minutes halfway through the first half to take control.
“Ava laid the ball off to Iris, she got blasted, but the ref played advantage and Iris made some moves and scored,” Cantley said. “The girls got really confident. Ava got the next one. It was a good buildup after a nice combination from Audrey Mathes and Sienna Henderson.”
Mattern quickly put East Jefferson up 3-0 in the second half.
“We scored within a minute of kickoff,” Cantley said. “We had Ava playing on the left wing in an experiment and she came into the middle, Iris overlapped Ava and put in a nice ball.”
Mattern repayed the favor to Shiflett about 15 minutes later.
Injury switch
The Rivals also got a good game out of Ellise Gardner.
“Ellise was playing volleyball, but she hurt her shoulder so she switched to soccer,” Cantley said. “We played her at striker and she hasn’t played in a few years, but you could see she still has a feel for the game. She was linking up well. I’m excited to see how she can help us.”
East Jefferson (2-4-1, 2-5-1) visits Annie Wright (3-3-1) today.
