PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls soccer team showed the rest of the Olympic League 2A Division just how explosive it’s capable of being, scoring a goal against Kingston less than 30 seconds into the match.
And then the goals just kept coming. The Roughriders tallied eight goals in less than 30 minutes, then eased up on the gas pedal in an 8-0 win over the outmatched Buccaneers.
The win kept Port Angeles (2-0, 3-0) undefeated and in first place in the Olympic League 2A Division. The Riders have also scored 15 goals in their three wins. It was also the second straight shutout for the Roughriders after blanking Sequim 3-0 Saturday.
Head coach Scott Moseley said he told his players before the match began to “score early and often” and put the game out of doubt quickly.
They took his words to heart with a goal in less than 25 seconds — on a cross in front of the net from sophomore Millie Long to freshman Catie Brown.
“That’s the fastest I’ve ever seen us score,” Moseley said.
“We’re off to a really solid start. “We’re scoring lots of goals, but we still need to be a better team.”
Long and Kyrsten McGuffey were an especially dangerous combination as they worked together on the next two goals. Long scored the second goal on a pass from McGuffey, then Long and Brown worked the ball across the field to McGuffey for her first goal of the match.
McGuffey added two goals for a hat trick plus an assist. Long finished with two goals and an assist.
Perhaps the most impressive goal of the night came from defender Delaney Wenzl, who showed off her strong leg on a kick from at least 30 yards out to beat the Kingston goalkeeper, for a 5-0 lead.
Brooklyn Alton picked up her second goal in as many games with an assist from freshman Bailee Larson.
Brown finished with a goal and an assist, while freshman Teagan Clark picked up an assist on a perfect pass to Long that set her loose on a long run and goal.
After the Roughriders got up 8-0 barely halfway through the first half, Moseley put in substitutes, placing Long on the back line and instructing his team not to run up the score.
Moseley said the real test for the Riders is when they play the powerhouses of the league — North Kitsap and Olympic. Port Angeles plays its first match against the Vikings on September 20 and against the Trojans on Sept. 27.
The Riders have two nonleague matches before those huge league contests. Port Angeles (2-0, 3-0, 6 points) visits Port Townsend (0-0, 1-3) at 6 p.m. today and is at 3A Ferndale (3-0-1) on Saturday.
