GIRLS SOCCER: Port Angeles’ Long, Wenzl make All-State team

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ Millie Long was rewarded for her record-breaking girls soccer season by being selected to the first team of the All-State 2A girls soccer team.

Long won’t be alone on the team. Her teammate Delaney Wenzl was picked as a member of the second team.

Long, a junior forward, set Port Angeles High School all-time goal record by scoring 33 goals this year. She also added 11 assists. She has 71 goals for her career. She was named all-Olympic League 2A MVP and was the Peninsula Daily News’ All-Peninsula girls soccer MVP for the third time in three seasons.

Wenzl, a senior midfielder, scored seven goals and had seven assists this season.

Wenzl also was a first-team All-Olympic League selection and also voted to the All-Peninsula squad.

Long and Wenzl led the Roughriders to a 16-3-1 record and an Olympic League 2A championship — their first in 34 years. The Riders also made a trip to the state 2A Tournament, making it all the way to the state quarterfinals.

Long made second-team All-State as a freshman. It is Wenzl’s first all-state selection.

“It is hard to be recognized if you play on the Peninsula, so I was very happy to see Delaney’s second-team all state award. She is very deserving, especially considering how many games she missed all or part of and the fact that she played in pain throughout the season,” said her coach Scott Moseley. Wenzl had surgery on her leg after the conclusion of the season.

No other North Olympic Peninsula girls made the team, but three from North Kitsap — goalkeeper Sophie Pixton (first team) and forward Kamora McMillian (second team) and midfielder Charlotte Bond (second team) were honored.
