SEQUIM — Eight Wolves scored goals as Sequim shut out the Bulldogs 9-0 in a girls soccer match at home Thursday.
“How they scored those goals is how we see our improvement,” coach Ken Garling said. “We did a better job of cycling the ball around and being patient and not giving up possession. We wanted to possess, make them chase and open up avenues to exploit offensively and we did all of that.”
Taryn Johnson opened the scoring inside of the first minute.
Sequim’s all-time leading scorer turned distributor for the rest of the game.
“She had four assists which shows you Taryn’s mentality. She’s just as quick to set others up for success,” Garling said.
Freshman Sasha Yada scored twice, Jenny Gomez kept up her strong run of play with a goal and an assist, Raimey Brewer added a goal, as did Olive Bridge.
“Olive had probably the prettiest goal, a 30-yard rocket, they gave her space, it was a really pretty goal,” Garling said.
Nikoline Updike subbed in and scored. Freshman Naveah Nelson notched her first varsity goal.
“A great scramble in the box and she was in the right place at the right time,” Garling said.
Kiley Winter finished out the scoring for Sequim (7-1-0).
The Wolves visit Port Angeles on Tuesday.
Port Angeles 4, Kingston 0
KINGSTON — The Riders made sure they put quality shots on goal against Buccaneers goalkeeper Leighton Menge, a Central Washington commit.
“We talked about her before the game and earning every goal we get,” coach Daniel Horton said. “A goal that goes in against another team may not go in against her, so we need a little extra. And the girls stepped up their games and met that challenge and didn’t waste opportunities.”
Port Angeles broke through in the 21st minute after some uneven play by both teams to open the game.
“Becca Manson was able to make a good run with the ball at her feet, she got taken out from behind and wanted to take the penalty and she scored on a firm ball to the right,” Horton said.
The Riders connected on a set piece to go up 2-0 in the 55th minute.
Pyper Alton scored off of a Teanna Clark corner kick.
“Teanna has really taken it on herself to own her corner kicks and play really good balls from the corner. It’s nice to see her hard work pay off.”
Senior defender Maeve Croteau scored in the 64th for a 3-0 lead.
“There was a Kingston hand ball on the left side about 30 yards from the goal,”Horton said. “Maeve took the free kick and it was a laser, it hovered off the ground waist to knee high to the far post and hit nothing but the side net.”
Manson scored her second goal of the match just before the final whistle.
Kennedy Rognlien picked up the clean sheet in goal.
Port Angeles (5-4-0) hosts Sequim on Tuesday.
Annie Wright 3, East Jefferson 2
TACOMA — Defensive lapses hurt the Rivals in a Nisqually League loss Thursday.
“Game plan was to attack them, but we had a little bit of a slow start and weren’t able to match Annie Wright’s intensity and aggression,” coach Rob Cantley said. “They put two goals up on us midway through the first half, we fell asleep defensively.”
East Jefferson did cut the score to 2-1 at half and 3-2 in the second half on two Iris Mattern goals, but it wasn’t enough.
East Jefferson (2-5-1, 2-6-1) hosts Vashon on Tuesday.
