SEQUIM — Sequim striker Taryn Johnson found the back of the net five times as the Wolves overpowered Olympic 6-1 at home in a girls soccer match at Teterud Field on Tuesday.
Johnson, a speedy blur at the top of the Wolves’ attack, was a first-team All-Olympic League pick last season who led Sequim with 24 goals, including six hat tricks.
She earned another hat trick in 27 minutes against the Trojans.
“Taryn Johnson got it going for us, she got a nice assist from Libby Turella in the third minute,” coach Ken Garling said.
“In the 14th minute, Taryn scored on another great shot on goal. Raimey Brewer had a nice assist and Taryn finished well.”
The hat trick was finalized in the 27th minute.
“She just outran their two center defenders and Taryn got a 1-on-1 with the keeper, and that’s usually going to go in her favor.”
Johnson scored off some deflections after a Brewer corner in the 47th minute, and Brewer added another assist on Johnson’s final goal around the 60-minute mark.
“Raimey and Taryn are working really well together,” Garling said. “They see the field together.”
Jenny Gomez closed out the game with a 73rd-minute score assisted by Eve Breithaupt.
Garling also praised center backs Kaia Lestage and Ivy Barrett for their play.
“They are phenomenal back there, they are in synch — when one goes forward the other drops to cover — and they both are so good at anticipating passes,” Garling said.
Sequim (2-1-0) visits North Kitsap (2-1-0) tonight.
Port Angeles 7, North Mason 0
BELFAIR — Four Roughrider freshmen scored goals as the Roughriders blanked the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
“We watched film on them and saw they are an improving team. They want to play physical and take the space away,” Port Angeles coach Daniel Horton said.
“We scored a couple of goals early, but North Mason kept fighting and fighting, so that physical play was good for us to see.”
Senior Anna Petty scored off the opening touch to get things going.
“[North] got the opening kick, Anna forced a turnover in the middle, a couple of quick 1-2 passes and [she] laced one from about 25 yards out on the right. I don’t think their goalie expected her to shoot it, but I don’t think she would have stopped it if she did,” Horton said.
Freshman Kedryn DeScala found the net in the 13th minute, while classmates Teana Clark scored in the 67th and Pyper Alton bagged two goals — in her first varsity action — in the 62nd and 75th minutes.
Paige Mason (35th) and Julia Baeder (45th) also scored for Port Angeles.
“We were without three starters, Piper Williams, Izzy Felton and Saylah Commerton, are all a little banged up, so if we didn’t need them, I wasn’t going to play them.”
Another freshman, Kennedy Rognlien, moved into goal for Commerton.
“She was able to make a diving save on a shot on goal that would have tied it up at 1-1,” Horton said.” “Our defense limited pretty much anything and our midfielders did a good job keeping control.”
Port Angeles (3-0-0) visits Olympic (2-1-0) today.
East Jefferson 4, Cascade Christian 1
PORT TOWNSEND — The Rivals held on to a 2-0 halftime lead earn their first win of the season.
“Good to get our first win under our belt after two ties when we had 2-0 leads,” coach Robert Cantley said.
East Jefferson was able to use its speed to its advantage to get two first-half scores.
“We were doing well getting behind their back line, which was a little bit slow,” Cantley said. “We were looking to exploit that using our speed.”
Kaylen Pray, the team’s leading scorer, notched a goal in the 16th.
“Ava Shiflett played her in behind the defense and she beat the keeper to the ball for an empty netter,” Cantley said.
Leah Harrison added a goal assisted by Natalie Zavalza in the 28th.
“[Cascade] did get a goal halfway through second half and they were pressing us pretty hard to get the tying goal, but our defense held pretty strong and we scored our last two goals in the last two minutes,” Cantley said.
Pray notched her second goal off a long ball from the back line and Shiflett scored the final goal off of a long free kick by Izzy McCracken.
Cantley also praised defensive midfielder Mi Amada Lanphear Ramirez.
“She was doing well at plugging up the midfield and stopping their attacks,” Cantley said.
East Jefferson (1-1-2) visits Klahowya (2-0) tonight.
