PORT TOWNSEND — Sequim won a low-scoring battle 1-0 against Port Townsend at Memorial Field.
The only goal in the game came on a penalty kick by Sequim’s Vianey Cadenas after a hand ball in the 60th minute.
“In this tightly fought game only a late penalty separated the teams,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said of Thursday’s game.
“Both Sequim and PT had chances, but both the goalkeepers were up to anything fired their way.”
Sequim co-coach Julie Lancheros praised the defense of Lisa Radford, Audrey Shingleton, Mattie Clark and Vianey Cadenas.
Foden is pleased with how his young and shorthanded team continues to improve.
Port Townsend (0-5) plays at Olympic (3-1) on Tuesday, while Sequim (1-3) hosts Bremerton (1-4) that same day.
Port Angeles 3, North Mason 0
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders earned their first win of the season in dominating fashion at Civic Field.
“We had such a tough draw for our first three games and were on the verge of being disheartened,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said after Thursday’s game.
“It was satisfying for the girls to see their efforts pay off with some really good soccer.”
Goalkeeper Hayley Baxley earned the shutout for the Riders.
After a scoreless first half, Port Angeles scored its first goal when Brittany McBride collected a pass from Maddie Boe and was able to cut the ball to her left foot. Her shot in the upper corner just evaded the reach of North Mason goalkeeper Andi Rasmussen.
Boe scored the Riders’ other two goals, both on assists from Kylee Jeffers.
“Scoring the second goal really was motivating and pushed me to strive for the third,” Boe said after the game.
The combination earned Boe a co-offensive player of the game honors, while Jeffers and Emma Moseley were named Port Angeles’ top transition players. Emma Moseley had two shots from distance that hit the crossbar, including one that was tipped by Rasmussen.
Defensively, the Olympic League’s third leading scorer, Tegan Daviscourt, was shut out in an all-round team effort. Moseley singled out Callie Peet as defensive player of the game.
The Bulldogs fall to 2-2 on the season.
Port Angeles next plays Tuesday at North Kitsap (5-0).
