BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls basketball team overcame a slow start to crush Bremerton the rest of the way, cruising to a 55-25 road win Friday to improved to 3-2 in the Olympic League.
The Roughriders had a sloppy start to the game, but turned up its defense to smother the Knights afterward.
“We had a rough first quarter,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “Bremerton got eight of their 12 first-quarter points from lay-ins directly off our open-court turnovers. We did a better job of taking care of the ball after that, and our defense was effective in holding Bremerton to 13 points in the final three quarters and forcing 46 turnovers. All ten Roughriders got at least one steal.”
Lindsay Smith led the team with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, doing much of her damage on steals and offensive putbacks. Teanna Clark had 10 points and seven steals, while Morgan Politika had one of her best games of the year with nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with five steals. Storey Schmidt had seven rebounds.
The Riders (3-2, 6-5) next host Kingston (2-4, 5-8) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

TACOMA — The East Jefferson girls won their fourth straight, beating Life Christian 56-49 behind another great game by the quartet of Kat Botkin, Penina Vailolo, Teri Wiley and Dylin Shockley.
The Rivals got five 3-pointers and 28 points from Shockley, her second huge game in a row. She scored 30 in a win earlier this week against Klahowya.
Botkin, meanwhile, had 19 points and nine assists, while Vailolo had 20 rebounds to go with 12 points. Wiley had her usual big contribution without scoring a lot with eight rebounds and six steals. Kaydence Plotner had seven rebounds.
East Jefferson (5-6) next hosts Charles Wright in Port Townsend at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

SEQUIM — The Sequim girls basketball team played Olympic tough but fell in a close one at home Saturday 45-42.
“Hailey [Wagner] led us in scoring with 12 points and 12 rebounds she had her best game of the season,” said coach Joclin Julmist. “The team worked hard today.”
Libby Turella had 10 points and four steals. “[It was] one of her better games of the season. She looked to get to the basket,” Julmist said.
Gracie Chartraw had six points, five rebounds and four steals and Taylor Heyting had five points and six rebounds.
The Sequim girls fell behind 21-5 in the first quarter and were never able to get back in the game in a 54-23 loss at North Kitsap on Friday.
“We didn’t match their intensity today we couldn’t buy a basket, and we didn’t do a good job defending. We also lost the rebounding battle,” said coach Joclin Julmist. “Tough game. Back at it tomorrow.”
Gracie Chartraw led the Wolves with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Taylor Heyting had five points and six rebounds.
Sequim (1-4, 2-7) played Olympic on Saturday and next hosts Bremerton (0-6, 0-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Crescent 22, Shoreline Christian 18
SHORELINE — The Crescent girls basketball team, starting three eighth-graders and with only one girl on the bench, came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Shoreline Christian 22-18.
“It was a battle the whole game,” said coach Brian Shimko. It was the second win a row for the young Loggers, who also beat Easton 44-22 last week.
Naomii Sprague led the Loggers with 17 points and seven steals. She also had 29 points against Easton.
The three eighth-graders, Kali Hopper, Lexi Buck and Ella Kneiss — all played well, Shimko said. Hopper had seven rebounds, Buck 10 rebounds, five of them on the offesnive boards and Kniess played up top with Sprague on the defense.
Crescent (4-5 overall) next plays at Clallam Bay at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.
