BELLEVUE — The Port Angeles girls basketball team won the District 2/3 2A tournament by crushing White river 61-33 in the championship game Saturday night.
Anna Petty had one of her biggest games of the year with 20 points and five steals, while Eve Burke had 27 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals. The Roughriders outscored White River 22-4 in the fourth quarter to blow the game open.
“Both teams played outstanding defense in the game, causing turnovers fairly equally throughout the game,” said coach Michael Poindexter. “Burke scored 18 of her 27 points in the first half, and our defense did a great job of limiting White River’s outside scoring threats.”
Poindexter said the Roughriders lost some confidence in the third quarter and White River made a 7-0 run to make a game of it.
“Early in the fourth quarter, Burke hit a lay-in and two free-throws, and Bailee Larson made a timely 3-point shot, plus two-free throws to get our lead to a more comfortable 48-29,” Poindexter said. “Also critical to our fourth quarter success was our 8-for-11 shooting from the free-throw line.”
“The Hornets are young, with six sophomores and three freshmen, but their matchup zone defense was one of the best defenses we’ve faced all year,” he said.
The Riders (17-4) learned Sunday that they will be a No. 6 seed at regional and will play No. 3 seed Hudson’s Bay out of Vancouver. Hudson’s Bay was 13-1 in the Great St. Helen’s League and is 17-3 overall. Win or lose, Port Angeles will move on to the 2A state tournament in the Yakima SunDome beginning March 2.
Bailee Larson added five points, seven steals and six rebounds, while Lexie Smith had six rebounds.
The Sequim girls also qualified for regional, finishing third in the District 1/2 tournament. The Wolves (19-4) were given a No. 13 seed and will play No. 12 seed Lynden (15-6). Sequim has to win this game to qualify for the state tournament.

Mount Vernon Christian 65, Neah Bay 53
MOUNT VERNON — Neah Bay finished second in the Tri-District girls basketball tournament, losing in the championship game to Mount Vernon Christian 65-53.
Rayna Moss led the Red Devils with 16 points, while Ezrah Ray had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Allie Green 11 points. Amber Swan had 14 rebounds to go along with seven points.
Mount Vernon Christian ended up the No. 1 seed at regional. Neah Bay is a No. 3 seed and automatically gets a bid to the 1B state tournament in Spokane Arena. Neah Bay will play No. 6 seed Mossyrock at regionals at a date and place to be determined.
