GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL: Three-time defending champ Neah Bay looks tough again

PA beats North Mason on the road

NEAH BAY — For the fourth straight year, the Neah Bay girls basketball team showed they are the 1B team to beat with a 64-27 statement win Saturday over 2A Port Angeles.

The Red Devils, who have won three straight state championships at the 1B level, had three players in double figures. Angel Halttunen led the way, making three 3-pointers and scoring 19. Qwaapeys Greene had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Cerise Moss scored 13.

For the Roughriders, Teanna Clark scored 19, while Lindsay Smith had six points and seven rebounds.

“While the quarter score margins are fairly consistent, the first quarter was where we played most like we had hoped,” said Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter. “We missed six inside shots in the quarter. Our shots were a bit rushed due to Neah Bay’s outstanding defense. But the shots themselves were the results of good passes and drives.”

“As we fell further behind, our level of play deteriorated. We played with desperation at times, forcing early drives and passes,” Poindexter said.

Port Angeles was coming off a league-opening 50-15 win over North Mason.

The Riders (1-0, 1-2) next play at The Riders play at Bainbridge (1-0, 2-1) on Tuesday.

Neah Bay split a pair of games in late November at a tournament in Auburn, beating Thomas Jefferson 63-49 and losing to 4A Mercer island 57-49. Neah Bay (2-1) next hosts Forks at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Sequim outscored Anacortes 15-2 in the fourth, but couldn’t make up a 15-point deficit.

Friday’s Game

Port Angeles 50, North Mason 15

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls basketball team bounced back from a season-opening loss by winning its Olympic League opener in dominant fashion 50-15 over North Mason on Friday.

The Roughriders’ defense held North Mason to 20 percent shooting for the game (7-for-35). North Mason didn’t score more than six points in any quarter and the Bulldogs’ leading scorer had six. The Riders got up 15-2 after the first quarter and 29-7 at the half.

Meanwhile, the Riders made seven 3-pointers and shot 45 percent (10-for-22) on 2-point attempts.

Teanna Clark and Lindsay Smith led the team with 16 points each, both of them scoring more than the entire North Mason team. Smith added 10 rebounds, five steals and five assists, while Clark had seven steals.

“We had a strong first quarter as our full-court press helped us generate points. We pressed for the first three quarters and forced 35 Bulldog turnovers in the game,” said Port Angeles head coach Michael Poindexter. “In comparison with Tuesday night’s Forks game [A 38-35 loss], we shot the ball better from every area — inside, the 3-point line and the free-throw line

Sariah Doherty and Kenzie Moses each scored six, while Mikkhia Stevens and Storey Schmidt each had five rebounds and Becca Manson four steals.

“North Mason played a 2-3 zone most of the game. We did a better job than we did Tuesday night of being patient and getting inside to score, balancing our inside and outside attempts,” Poindexter said. “Our coaches were very pleased with the offensive patience showed against the Bulldogs’ 2-3 zone, as well as more balanced, under-control shooting and passing approach than we had Tuesday night.”
