GIRLS BASKETBALL: Vaara pours in 29 points in Wolves’ win

Port Angeles girls bounce back with road win over Bremerton

BAINBRIDGE — Jolene Vaara dominated for Sequim in a 60-45 girls basketball win over Bainbridge on the road Tuesday night.

“Jolene led the way with 29 points and five rebounds. She was amazing tonight in all phases of the game,” coach Joclin Julmist said.

Vaara knocked down 10 of 15 shots from the field, including draining both 3-pointers she attempted, and also hit 7 of 9 from the free-throw line. She also swiped three steals and had two assists.

Jelissa Julmist posted 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

“Jelissa was solid, she did a great job communicating and passing the ball and moving her feet on defense,” Joclin Julmist said.

Point guard Hannah Bates added eight points, four assists and three steals.

“Hannah did a really good job leading us and playing defense,” Julmist said.

Sequim (1-0, 2-0) hosts Bremerton tonight.

BREMERTON — Tight defense and solid shooting helped the Roughriders roll out to a 30-9 lead at halftime in their Olympic League season opener Tuesday.

“Our first-half margin was the result of points scored off of turnovers caused by our full-court press in the first quarter and good percentage shooting in the second quarter,” coach Michael Poindexter said.

Up big, Port Angeles was a little lax in the second half, according to Poindexter.

“Our second-half performance was marred by eight turnovers in the third quarter and shooting 1-of-10 on 3-point attempts in the second half,” Poindexter said. “Our turnovers were the result of too many high-risk passes in transition and forcing the ball inside too early against Bremerton’s zone defense.”

Senior Anna Petty led the Riders with 12 points and seven steals.

Freshman Lindsay Smith posted eight points and a team-high five rebounds.

Izzy Felton added five points and five steals.

“Anna Petty, Izzy Felton and Piper Williams had solid defensive performances both in our press and in our 2-3 zone,” Poindexter said.

“I was pleased with our getting to the line 17 times and making 12 (71 percent), largely the result of good decision-making on driving opportunities.”
