BREMERTON — Reigning Olympic League MVP Jolene Vaara put up a superstar-caliber performance, nearly achieving a quadruple double in Sequim’s 70-44 girls basketball win over Bremerton.
“The girls played better defense tonight and created turnovers that led to a few easy baskets,” coach Joclin Julmist said.
“Jolene was really good tonight leading us in points with 23, rebounds with 10, assists with eight and seven steals. She played a complete game.”
Gracie Chartraw added a team-high nine steals and scored 16 points.
“She did a good job tonight trying to get her teammates involved in the game,” Julmist said.
Bobbi Mixon added 11 points, while Dani Herman added nine points and nine rebounds.
“Bobbi got things rolling tonight with 11 points. We need her to be aggressive on both sides of the court,” Julmist said. “Dani had the best game of her career so far. We need her to continue to be effective on the inside.”
Libby Turella also posted good numbers with seven points and nine rebounds.
“She was everywhere tonight,” Julmist said. “She had a few deflections that led to easy baskets for us. Everyone got a chance to play tonight. It’s always fun when we can get all of the girls playing time.”
Sequim (1-1) hosts North Kitsap at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

BELFAIR — The Smith sisters had solid outings as the Roughriders caged a Bulldogs team missing three starters.
“North Mason was missing three key starters [Adrianne, Adrianna and Tanza Tupolo] in the game,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “Those players accounted for 40 of the Bulldogs’ 49 points against us in our two games against North Mason last year.”
Sophomore Lindsay Smith tallied a double-double, leading Port Angeles with 20 points on 62 percent shooting from the floor, 13 rebounds and four steals.
“Lexie Smith also had an efficient shooting night [55 percent on field goals and 100 percent on free throws] for her 13 points. We had balanced scoring, with five players scoring eight points or more.”
Paige Mason had a good night on the boards with nine rebounds and she shared the team-high in assists at five with fellow senior Izzy Felton.
Port Angeles managed 37 more shot attempts than North Mason thanks to a 15-3 lead on the offensive boards and the Riders committing 25 fewer turnovers than the Bulldogs.
Olympic visits Port Angeles (2-0, 4-1) tonight at 7 p.m.

SEATTLE — The Rivals picked up their performance to earn the Nisqually League win.
“Good performance by the girls,” coach Lorraine Rimson said. “We were without Kaetyn Riley, so the rest of the team really stepped up.”
Sophomore Penina Vailolo led the way with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
“She continues to grow and at times dominate,” Rimson said.
East Jefferson also was sparked by freshman JV captain Gracie Smith.
“Gracie Smith gave us quality post minutes when Penina and Abbie [Liske] were in foul trouble,” Rimson said.
The Rivals (2-1, 2-3) host Life Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

AMANDA PARK — The Crescent girls basketball team got up 41-1 at the half and went on to win 62-10 over Lake Quinault on Tuesday for its third win in a row.
The Loggers were led by Naomii Sprague with 24 points and six steals, while Ciara Cargo had 19 points while making three 3-pointers. Alexis Dunavant had 10 points and four steals.
“It was a good confidence-booster,” said coach Brian Shimko.
In addition to the winning streak, the Loggers also got the good news that they are gaining a player to add to their thin bench. Their roster will grow from six to seven.
“They can do it. We’re still going to meet teams with bigger benches,” Shimko said.
Crescent (3-3) will host Wishkah Valley at 5 p.m. today, then will travel to play Ocosta on Friday.

Girls bowling Bremerton 5, Port Angeles 2
BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls bowling team lost to Bremerton on Tuesday at All Star Lanes. The Riders bounced back from a game one loss and took game two. However, they dropped both of the team Baker games and the total pin count.
Abby Robinson averaged a 154 (157-151) on the day, Paige Pangaro added a single-game high 146, and Kenadie Ring rolled a 130. Jule Getzin had a 134 in the junior varsity match.
The Roughriders look to get back on the winning side when they host North Mason at 2:45 p.m. today at Laurel Lanes.
