GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sequim’s Jolene Vaara notches senior night triple double

Port Angeles clinches share of Olympic League title

SEQUIM — Sequim’s Jolene Vaara was two steals shy of a quadruple-double as the Wolves enjoyed an 81-44 senior night victory over Olympic at Rick Kaps Gymnaisum on Thursday.

The reigning Olympic League MVP was a force all over the court against the Trojans.

“It was senior night for Jolene and she went out with a bang with her first triple double — she had 13 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, eight steals and two block shots,” coach Joclin Julmist said.

“She was simply amazing.”

Freshman Gracie Chartraw and junior Bobbi Mixson each totaled 21 points for Sequim.

“Bobbi was on fire in the first half going 5-for-6 from the 3-point line,” Julmist said. She was on fire .

“Gracie was good on both sides of the court . She has been a warrior for us. She filled up the stat line with 21 points, 6 rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocked shots.”

Libby Turella was active with 13 points, six steals and three blocks.

“Taylor Heyting and Hailey Wagner both had 4 points tonight and did a good job playing defense,” Julmist said.

“Rilynn Whitehead had 3 points and Claire Turella scored her first varsity points, everyone got a chance to play and that’s always fun.”

Sequim (10-3, 12-4) visits rival Port Angeles on Tuesday in the second half of a boys/girls doubleheader at 7 p.m.

Port Angeles 53, Kingston 34

KINGSTON — The Roughriders built a 20-point lead entering the fourth quarter, saw that advantage nearly halved via a Buccaneers’ run early in the final frame, but bounced back with a run of their own to close out Kingston on the road.

With the win Port Angeles (11-1, 13-6) clinched a share of the Class 2A Olympic League title and needs to win one of its final two games (Sequim and at Bremerton) to claim the league outright.

“Kingston played a solid game and had much better ball movement and shooting than they did in our previous meeting,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “Our 20-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter dropped to just a 12-point lead after the first three minutes of the quarter after a Kingston lay-in and two three-pointers.

At our end, we struggled early in the quarter offensively with turnovers and missed outside shots early in the shot clock. We settled down after that and went on a 10-0 run in the next three minutes to build the lead to 22 points, as we successfully got the ball inside for lay-ins and free throws.”

Lindsay Smith led the Riders with 16 points and added three steals. Teanna Clark scored 15 and Paige Mason added 13 with seven rebounds and four assists.

“Lindsay Smith did all of her scoring inside; Paige Mason and Teanna Clark combined for five three-point makes and five free-throw makes, in addition to inside scoring for both,” Poindexter said.

The Riders host rival Sequim Tuesday.
