GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Roughriders romp, Sequim digs in defensively and Izzy Hammett scores 29 for Port Townsend in win

PORT ANGELES — It was an all-smiles evening for the Port Angeles girls basketball team in an 81-17 rout of Bremerton at home Friday night.

The Roughriders stayed unbeaten in Olympic League play in a game in which their shots were falling and their defensive pressure was suffocating.

“We shot the ball extremely well in the first half — 55 percent from the field [and] 71 percent from the free-throw line and played outstanding half-court defense,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said.

Eve Burke led the Riders with 18 points while hitting 8 of 11 shots. She added five steals.

“She hit several mid-range shots along the baseline and got a number of offensive rebound put-backs,” Poindexter said of Burke’s big night.

“Jaida Wood’s 12 points were the result of a 5 of 9 shooting effort. Our other double-figure player, Catie Brown, was a perfect 4 of 4 from the field.”

The entire varsity squad saw the floor in the win.

“All 13 of our players got substantial playing time, and we were glad to see several of them act effectively on improvement goals we’ve had for them,” Poindexter said. “We had solid effort on the floor and great support from the players on the bench.”

Myra Walker led the Riders with nine rebounds and Millie Long and Bailee Larson each posted four assists.

Port Angeles (5-0, 9-3) visits rival Sequim (5-0, 9-3) in a tussle for first place in the Olympic League on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.

NEAH BAY — The Spartans knocked off Neah Bay for Forks’ first win over the Red Devils since the 2010 season, according to Forks coach David Hurn.

“And they had to go earn it.”

“Completely different game than what we showed on Tuesday,” Hurn said.

“We were disappointed. We challenged ourselves about what team we want to be and it was night-and-day difference.

“It was fun to watch the girls play with that amount of energy and passion and our seniors were pretty excited about the win.”

Chloe Leverington had a game-high 17 points, including 10 in the first quarter, as Forks utilized its height advantage inside from the get-go.

“Chloe is a heck of a player and we wanted to take advantage and she did a great job,” Hurn said. “But we got contributions from everybody at different times in the game.”

Jayden Olson scored 11 for the Spartans.

Freshmen Kadie Wood and Kyra Neel had 10 and 6 points, respectively for the Spartans.

“Kadie and Jayden shot the ball really well in the third quarter and Kadie and Kyra Neel had 10 of our 14 points in the fourth,” Hurn said.

The Cowboys had a lead of 23-12 a the end of the first half in Thursday’s game. The Rangers outscored Chimacum 16-12 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to catch up.

“We are seeing good growth in the team and there is improvement but the ceiling is high so we have to keep working,” said Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford. “It has and will be the mantra this year that everyday has to be a day we grow to compete. We are young and lack a lot of playing experience in our underclassmen.”
