CHIMACUM — Port Townsend’s pressure defense did the job in a decisive third quarter as the Redhawks strung together some stops and turned them into instant offense to pull away from rival Chimacum in a 28-18 girls basketball win Wednesday.
“I think that’s fair. We did hit a little bit of a rhythm in our press in the third quarter,” Port Townsend coach Lorraine Rimson said.
“If I had a statistician I would say that we maybe shot 10 percent from the floor. That was a huge factor in it not being a different score after the first half.
“Our girls were really disappointed because we had open looks, we were taking shots from the places we needed to be, but we couldn’t buy a basket.”
Chimacum head coach Trevor Huntingford said his team grew defensively from its season opener last Friday.
“We took a giant leap defensively from where we were last week,” Huntingford said. “There’s tons of room for improvement, but this was a step in the right direction.
“The real separation came in the third quarter when we had one bad stretch where we gave up six straight points.”
Chimacum was without senior starter Diamond Young, who suffered a concussion in practice earlier this week.
“It hurt not having Diamond Young out there for us,” Huntingford said.
“She’s one of the three girls who can score the ball for us. So that was tough for us and for her as a senior, missing a PT game is tough.”
Huntingford said Jadeah Nordberg was active with four points and 13 rebounds.
Katie Clark led Chimacum with seven points and played the entire game, which Huntingford said was a point of pride for her.
“She is really going to be big in any kind of success we have this season,” Huntingford said.
And Huntingford praised freshman starter Shelby Thibeault for her poise.
“Shelby did a real good job of staying steady,” Huntingford said. “She started for us as a freshman and she maybe wasn’t expecting that, but she did an admirable job.”
Aurin Asbell led Port Townsend with eight points. Izzy Hammett and Gina Brown each added six points.
And Rimson, new to the Port Townsend-Chimacum rivalry, learned about the Janelle Perillo Traveling Trophy-given to the winner of the season series between the two Jefferson County teams.
“Our girls taught us about the trophy,” Rimson said. “They showed us the trophy in the Chimacum trophy case and they are very interested in that trophy.”

KINGSTON — The Wolves earned a solid road win in their Olympic League 2A Division opener against the Buccaneers.
“This was a fast-paced game, with Kingston shooting a lot of three-point shots, but we came out strong in the third quarter and pulled a solid lead,” Sequim coach Linsay Rapelje said. “Kingston is a team to watch out for this season. I’m proud of my team for making adjustments and finishing strong.”
Jessica Dietzman led the Wolves with 13 points and also nabbed two steals. Melissa Porter added 10 points for Sequim, while Hope Glasser had nine points to go along with four assists, two steals and two blocks.
Jayla Julmist grabbed 11 rebounds with five assists and three steals to go along with her four points.
Sequim (1-0, 4-0) hosts North Mason (1-0, 2-2) on Friday.

FORKS — Rian Peters had 19 points and freshman Kadie Woods added 18 as the Spartans ran past the Loggers on Wednesday night.
“We wanted to come out fast, especially after a game the night before, so wanted to get out fast and build a comfortable lead,” Forks coach David Hurn said. “Most of it was decided on the defensive end, our ball pressure led to fast-break opportunities. I was happy with what I saw in terms of our effort level and focus.”
Junior Kesia Rowley added 13 points for Forks and Chloe Leverington continued her season-long string of double-digit scoring games with 11 points.
Forks (2-1) hosts Port Townsend on Friday.
Ciara Cargo had eight points to lead Crescent (2-1). The Loggers host Darrington on Saturday.
