GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Meek and a strong rebounding effort propel Port Townsend to rivalry win

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks made things tough for the rival Cowboys offensively and earned their first win of the season in an Olympic League 1A game.

Port Townsend’s Kaitlyn Meek hit from inside and outside to tally 21 points to lead all scorers in Thursday’s game.

“But the story of the game was [the] Redhawks’ defense, which proved to be stiff both in the half court and in a press,” Port Towsend coach Scott B. Wilson said.

“Jenna Carson, Reilly Berkshire and Eileen Leoso just clogged up the middle in both man-to-man and zone defensive sets.

“Chimacum got very few inside points. Berkshire fought for every rebound.”

Cowboys coach Trevor Huntingford said the game was Chimacum’s “worst overall performance to date.”

“We came out and put points up early against their man, and when they switched to zone defenses we failed to reverse the ball and we didn’t catch ready to shoot when we caught, and their length became a factor against us,” Huntingford said.

“Their size also affected us on the boards and that got them many second, third [and] fourth-shot opportunities.

“They just outworked us. And frankly we didn’t play well as we failed to even run our set properly and did not rotate on defense well tonight in general.

“Bottom line I felt they where just hungrier than we where and we just need to get our heads right and execute better.”

Shanya Nisbet led Chimacum with 12 points.

“We were not able to put the lid on the Cowboys’ outside shooters, especially Shanya Nisbet,” Wilson said.

Her twin sister, Olympic League 1A All-Leaguer Mechelle Nisbet was injured in the fourth quarter.

“Mechelle Nisbet is a particularly smart and hard-working player, and we all hope she makes a rapid recovery,” Wilson said.

Port Townsend (1-0, 1-5) hosts Quilcene on Monday.

Chimacum (0-1, 2-4) visits Kingston on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
