CLALLAM BAY — Rian Peters scored 25 points, including the eventual game-winner in the paint in overtime, as the Forks girls basketball team edged Clallam Bay 52-50 in overtime Tuesday night.
“She just filled the stat sheet,” Forks coach David Hurn said. “She had a triple double with rebounds and steals. She had quite a few assists, too.”
Hurn said he was worried about the game, a tough nonleague matchup against the Bruins, and the Spartans’ first game since falling to Tenino 38-37 on a halfcourt heave in the final seconds last Friday.
“We had a big emotional game, we are in a battle in league play and I didn’t want us to get caught looking ahead with a big matchup against Montesano coming up on Friday,” Hurn said.
“I’m proud and excited we were able to have a close game like this and pull it off. Especially with what happened last Friday, better to come out on the happy side of a game like this rather than a heartbreaker.”
Hurn said the Spartans were looking to call timeout with 10 seconds left in regulation and set up an inbounds play, but were whistled for a 3-second violation in the key.
“They called the first three in the key all game long and Clallam Bay got the ball back,” Hurn said. “And your mind goes straight back to the end of Friday’s game, but we had switched to man defense that last minute and our girls locked down and got a stop to force it to OT.”
Forks trailed early in overtime, but with the game tied, Peters stepped up.
“Rian, like she did all game made a big play on defense,” Hurn said. “She got a fast break, missed a contested layup, but got the offensive rebound and put it back in with 7 seconds left. Then she went back on defense and got a stop and a defensive rebound.
“It was good for Rian, she wasn’t happy with how she played down the stretch against Tenino even though she made a big shot to put us up. She had a chance and was able to finish last night and get the W.”
Hannah Olson had 22 points and Miriam Wonderly 19 to lead Clallam Bay (3-2, 8-7).
The Bruins host Crescent on Friday.
Forks (1-4, 7-9) visits Evergreen League-leading Montesano (5-1, 11-7) on Friday.

Port Angeles 68, North Mason 31
PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders worked well down low offensively to build a 35-13 halftime advantage and never looked back.
“We scored most of our first-half points inside, which was one of our pre-game goals,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said. “We shot 50 percent inside the 3-point arc, and Mikkiah Brady and Madi Cooke added three 3-pointers each to give us a balanced scoring night.”
Cooke led all scorers with 23 points and also had eight rebounds.
Brady was all over the court for the Riders, scoring 18 points, swiping six steals and dishing out five assists.
Eve Burke scored 14 points for the second straight contest and grabbed 13 rebounds.
“We took 67 shots compared to North Mason’s 36 shots,” Poindexter said. “Once we adjusted our responsibilities in our 1-3-1 defense in the second and third quarters, we caused some North Mason turnovers. Our offensive game suffered at times from poor execution, but those segments never lasted long, and I was pleased that we were able to maintain good ball movement in most parts of the game.”
Port Angeles (8-1, 14-3) remained tied for first place in the Olympic League 2A Division with the win and North Kitsap’s 66-39 win over Olympic on Tuesday. The Riders visit Olympic (3-5, 5-10) on Friday.

SEQUIM — Freshman guard Hannah Wagner led a balanced Wolves attack in scoring with 14 points as Sequim picked up the nonleague win at home Tuesday.
“We played very well as a team this game,” coach Linsay Rapleje said. “The girls set personal goals to work on new skills, and they were focused on those goals.
“Our defense was tenacious: Jessica Dietzman had six steals and Hope Glasser, Bobbi Sparks, Abby Schroeder and Hannah Wagner added four steals each.”
Wagner was 6 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Melissa Porter added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Wolves.
Kalli Wiker was the third Sequim scorer in double figures with 11.
Jayla Julmist had 18 rebounds and eight points for the Wolves.
“Overall, the girls played hard all four quarters and that’s all I can ever ask of them,” Rapleje said.
Sequim (7-2, 12-4) is all alone in third place in the Olympic League, a game behind North Kitsap and Port Angeles. The Wolves visit North Kitsap on Friday.
