ABERDEEN — The Forks girls basketball team overcame a difficult week off the court, getting off to hot starts in the first and second halves against Aberdeen.
The West End has been dealing with the shooting death of Tristen Pisani, a 2019 Forks High School graduate, and the team attended a candlelight vigil in his memory Thursday at Spartan Stadium.
With heavy hearts, they traveled to Aberdeen on Friday, winning 65-42 as six players scored six points or more.
“The community and the girls were affected by that. I’m proud of the girls,” said coach David Hurn.
The Spartans got off to an 18-8 start in the first quarter, but Aberdeen fought back in the second to make it 28-20 at the half for Forks.
“We had a really good start. We had a little bit of a letdown in the second quarter. I think the first-game jitters kicked in and we started playing outside our tempo.
In the third quarter, the Spartans put the game away with a 24-point quarter, taking a commanding 52-32 lead into the fourth.
“We came out in the second half ready to play. It was a great, great third quarter,” Hurn said.
Chloe Leverington led the Spartans with 20 points, while Rian Peters scored 12 and Jayden Olson 11. Kesia Rowley had nine points.
“We have to work on our rebounding. There were a few more tunovers than I would’ve liked. It wasn’t the prettiest game,” Hurn said. “These are little things we can tweak.”
The Spartans (1-0) next host Neah Bay (0-2) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks were shut out 8-0 in the decisive fourth quarter to fall in their home opener against the Falcons on Friday.
“Disappointing result for us, but we are learning,” Port Townsend coach Lorraine Rimson said of the outcome.
Izzy Hammett led the Redhawks with eight points, while SoSo Johnson had seven and Gina Brown and McKenzie Lake added six apiece.
Port Townsend (1-2) hosts Sequim (2-0) on Monday.

AMANDA PARK — Seven of the Loggers’ eight players scored in a season-opening win over the Elks on Friday.
“It was a total team effort,” Crescent coach Kelly Serrianne said. “Pretty cool to watch their hard work pay off.”
Cydne Moore led the way with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for the Loggers.
Chloe Conant added 15 and Ciara Cargo put in 12 for Crescent (1-0).
The Loggers visit Forks on Wednesday.

LA CONNER — The Red Devils knocked down 14 of 30 3-point attempts, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Braves’ offense in a nonleague loss Friday.
Freshman Allie Greene led Neah Bay with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets.
Cei’J Gagnon added 13 points and Ruth Moss had 11 points and four assists. Laila Greene added nine points on three 3-pointers and had three assists.
The Red Devils (0-2) visit Forks on Tuesday.

BREMERTON — The Cowboys couldn’t keep pace in the second half and fell in their season opener against the Warriors.
“Our inexperience and Niki Haruka’s hot shooting [27 points] won out in what was a well-contested first half,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said.
Haruka went for 19 of Crosspoint’s 25 first-half points, hitting primarily from long range, as Crosspoint led 25-18 at the break.
“We are trying to work everyday, every game, to get better this year,” Huntingford said. “We have a lot of youth [started two freshmen on this team and we are lacking experience both with our youth, but also as a unit and both will be things we will be working to put together as the season moves forward.”
Katie Clark had 11 points to pace Chimacum. Jadeah Nordberg added nine, Diamond Young four and Amiyah Fisher had two.
“Katie Clark played iron girl basketball taking on the bulk of the offensive load,” Huntingford said. “And in the second half [she] matched up against Haruka, who she held to five points in the second half, three of which came on a tightly contested shot.” Clark played all but the final two minutes of the game.
“Jadeah Nordberg played well and looked more for her own offense, which is a new role for her this year. And the same could be said for Diamond Young. Both ended the game with 10 boards.”
Chimacum (1-1) hosts Port Townsend on Wednesday.
